UALR wins conference title

UALR swept Texas State 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-12) Saturday in San Marcos, Texas, to win the Sun Belt Conference title for the first time since 2000.

Edina Begic was named Most Outstandin­g Player in the tournament after recording 21 kills. Sonja Milanovic and Megan Mathis also were named to the all-tournament team.

Mathis had 42 assists with four kills. Milanovic had 17 kills and six blocks. Capri Rino had 14 digs.

Tied 2-2 in the third game, UALR put away the match with five consecutiv­e points. The Trojans pushed the lead to 24-10 before Texas State scored consecutiv­e points before Millanovic made a kill to end the match.

Texas State overcame a 4-1 deficit to tie the second game 4-4. Both teams were tied 12-12 before UALR rallied to pull ahead 21-16 before winning 25-20.

UALR overcame a 4-1 deficit in the first game, tying the match at 4-4, leading at 7-6 before pulling away for a 17-10 lead.

UALR (26-6) has won 24 consecutiv­e matches will find out today who it will face in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. The selection show will be broadcast at 7:30 p.m. on ESPNU.

UALR will hold a watch party at the Legends Room in the Jack Stephens Center at 7 p.m. that will be open to the public.

Arkansas falls at Kentucky

Arkansas lost 3-0 (25-16, 25-18, 25-20) Saturday to Kentucky in Lexington.

Meredith Hays led the Razorbacks (15-16, 9-9 SEC) with 21 kills and 10 digs. Chanell Clark-Bibbs had seven kills, while Lori Fortado had five. Kori Ortiz had 14 digs. Holly Hankerson had eight digs.

Kentucky (26-5, 15-3) was led by Morgan Bergen, who finished with 10 kills and 25 assists. Jackie Napper had 15 digs.
