Dec. 4, 1914 VAN BUREN — Culley Pettus, 65 years of age, a retired minister, was fined $50 and costs, a total of $96, in the circuit court here on a plea of guilty to a charge of selling liquor without license. Pettit insisted he had only sold one quart of whiskey, and that he sold it to a sick friend. “You have too many sick friends.” Judge Edward Cochran replied. Pettit was sent to jail on a default of paying the fine. He was dismissed on a like charge in the United States court.

Gov. Faubus moved the possibility of a special session of the legislature before Christmas up to the “probable” stage today, but said that he is not ready yet to state definitely that it will be held. He also told a news conference that, if the special session should get as far as authorizing a $150 million bond issue for his road program, the cities, counties and state roads would all share in the benefits.

Arkansas paid too much for gasoline in the 1970s, and the extra money has been helping finance everything from superconductor research at the University of Arkansas to heaters in the McGehee Primary School. More than $40 million has come back to the state as a result of federal lawsuits against petroleum producers. The courts ordered Exxon Corp. and other producers to compensate consumers for overcharging on petroleum products while federal price controls were in effect.

A year after Jacksonville residents tried unsuccessfully to form a district apart from the Pulaski County Special School District, officials are exploring ways of breathing new life into the city schools. Those ideas — which include moving the ninth grade from the junior high to Jacksonville High School and establishing two middle schools, one for girls and one for boys — will be presented at a community meeting at 6 p.m. Thursday in Jacksonville High at 2400 Linda Lane. District administrators also will propose developing an aviation/aeronautics specialty program at Jacksonville High with help from entities such as the Little Rock Air Force Base, Central Flying Service and others with interest in the field.
