SULPHUR SPRINGS — A large number of people are coming from the Northern states this fall to escape the cold. Every week brings in a number of homeseekers or winter visitors, and more people are in the city than for several years past. Most of the new residents are from Iowa, Kansas and Missouri. The little town of Perry, Iowa, is emptying its population into Sulphur Springs this year. A number of families have already located here from this town, and they say that many more will soon follow.

PINE BLUFF — The employment of nonagricultural workers in Jefferson County reached an all-time high for the year in October with 26,250 persons in the labor market. This employment figure was due to season influences and raised both wage and salary figures for the Pine Bluff area. The labor market trends were announced by Earl R. Harrison, manager of the Employment Security Division office.

Twelve jurors and two alternates were selected Tuesday for what could be one of the biggest trials — as far as size — ever in Pulaski County or the state. More than 20 attorneys, all of whom are wearing name tags, will begin making their opening statements at 9:30 a.m. today in a case involving more than a dozen claims and counterclaims and millions of dollars, all stemming from a 1988 traffic accident. Four people were killed in the accident, which occurred June 8, 1988, and involved seven tractor-trailer rigs, three cars and a pickup truck.

A central Arkansas camp for at-risk children has formed a partnership with community and education leaders to find ways to spread the camp’s proven alternative education practices beyond its borders, using a $300,000 two-year grant. Pfeifer Kiwanis Camp, in the Ferndale area near Little Rock, has been open since 1929. Since then, it has offered a free summer residential camping program. Over the years, other programs have been added, including the Alternative Classroom Experience in 1988. The Alternative Classroom Experience is for third- through fifth-graders referred to Pfeifer from the Little Rock or Pulaski County Special school districts because they aren’t doing as well as they should be in school or at home. Those children live at the camp for five weeks. During the time the children are at the camp, their parents are expected to take part in weekly workshops on communication, disciplinary strategies and other parenting skills.
