ALENE PARKER BARNETTE, 77, of Little Rock died Dec. 4, 2014. She was born Aug. 16, 1937 in Winnsboro, La., to Louis J. Parker and his wife, Mary Helen Hickinbott­om Parker. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother. Alene leaves behind her husband of 54 years, Alton R. Barnette, four children, seven grandchild­ren, six great-grandchild­ren, five sisters and two brothers.

––––– ––––– JUNE BATES died Dec. 5, 2014. She was born June 17, 1936 to the late Velma Adcock and R. Vernon Bates in Monticello, Ark. June grew up in Dermott and graduated from Arkansas State Teachers College with a degree in Home Economics Education. While she was in education for several years, she was happier and more successful in retail sales.

Survivors are Nonie (Melvin) Carpenter of Lake Village, Ark.; Sherry (Larry) Beard of El Dorado, Ark.; four nephews and one niece. She is also survived by numerous relatives and friends, including the Cockrum family of Pine Bluff, Ark. The friends know who they are.

June was brought up Methodist and became a student of Unity Principals in the 1980’s. As she matured she gained a very close relationsh­ip with her Lord and Maker.

June’s passion was her needlework. She enjoyed sharing it with relatives, friends and those less fortunate.

––––– ––––– MILDRED CHARTON, 82, of Little Rock left her loving family to reside with the Lord on Dec. 4, 2014. She was born on April 4, 1932 to Walter and Mae (Charton) Nelson of Morrilton, Ark. Mildred was preceded in death by both of her parents; brother, Frank Nelson; and long time friend and companion, Edith Chapman, who was lovingly known as “Aunt Eddie” to all.

Mildred is survived by her brothers, Ray Nelson and Bobby Joe Nelson; nieces, Rayann Barry (George) and Susan Hanscom (David); and one nephew, Steven Nelson.

––––– ––––– REV. WILBERT GRAY, 65, of Maumelle, Ark., passed away Monday, Dec. 1, 2014 in John McClellan Memorial Veterans Hospital in Little Rock, Ark.

He was born Feb. 23, 1949 in Chatfield, Ark., to the late Fred and Josephine Gray.

Preceding him in death were two sisters, Ollie Parker and Sara Bettison; two brothers, Fred Gray Jr. and Robert Gray.

Survivors include his wife, Jeanie Gray, and five children, Niki Gray-White (John), Shaketa Burton (Kenneth Sr.), Sonya Brooks (Ronald Sr.), Yolonda Evans and Lawrence Anderson Jr.

Fond memories are left to his siblings, Cora Weatherly, Emma Jones, Andrew Gray (Ann), Dorotha Adams (Eddie), Lula Searcy, Hubert Gray (Charlene), Jeanette Cooper (Samuel), Varnette Bruce (Lee); 13 grandchild­ren.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2014 at Bethel AME Church in North Little Rock, Ark., with Bishop Samuel Green Sr., eulogist.

She was predecease­d by her parents, Frederick and Kathleen neé Boland Fleming, and two sisters, Mercedes and Theresa. She was an adored mother and wife. Survivors include her husband, Eugene P. Lewis; two children, Stacey Stewart of Salt Lake City, Utah and Dawn Renee Cecil and husband, Brad currently residing in Jacksonvil­le; brothers, Frederick Fleming and wife, Mary and John Fleming and wife, Veronica all of Hamilton, Ontario, Canada; sister, Margaret Swinimer of Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia, Canada. She had four grandchild­ren, Zoe, Daenerys, McKinley and Parker. ––––– ––––– ELIZABETH LOUISE LILES, 83, of North Little Rock, passed away Friday, Dec. 5, 2014 at her home. Mrs. Liles was born Sept. 23, 1931 to Frank and Tellie Todd. She was employed for over 20 years by Baker’s Shoe Stores.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Henry Wayburn Liles and sister, Marie Cook.

Mrs. Liles is survived by her son and caregiver, John Liles of Sherwood; a daughter, Kathy Ward (Benny) of McRae; grandchild­ren, Chad Langston of McRae, Jessica O’ Baugh (Matt) of North Little Rock; great-grandchild­ren, Hayden Langston and Henry O’Baugh; sister, Faye Tozer (Chester) of McRae; and several nieces and nephews.

Although Louise’s memory may have been erased by Alzheimer’s her family and friends are thankful for their cherished memories of time spent with Louise, also known as “Doodle” to many, and she will be greatly missed.

––––– ––––– MARGARET ALLENE FAULK McGAUGHY, age 71, of Little Rock passed away Monday, Dec. 1, 2014. She was born April 6, 1943, in Magnolia, Ark. to the late Arnold Faulk and Allene Cox Faulk. She is preceded in death by her son, Richard McGaughy.

She was a graduate of Pine Bluff High School and attended the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. Margaret loved to play tennis, was an avid reader and a member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church.

She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Chap McGaughy; daughter, Karen McGaughy of Vicksburg, Miss.; sister, Martha Griggs of Mayflower, Ark. and a brother, Richard Faulk of Springdale, Ark.

––––– ––––– ALLEN J. MEACHUM, 85, of Maumelle, while holding hands with his loving wife of 64 years, peacefully left this earth to be with his Lord and Savior Sunday, Nov. 30, 2014. He was born April 4, 1929 in Batesville, Ark. to the late Lonnie and Zela Meachum. Allen was a veteran of the Arkansas National Guard, owner of the Ben Franklin store in Conway, retired real estate broker and, for the last seven years, served as a cheerful Walmart door greeter in Maumelle. He was a 30-year member of Agape Church in Little Rock. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Winnie Meachum Brown and Earlene Meachum McMullin and a nephew, William “Bill” Brown. ––––– ––––– R.C. POTTER, 83, of North Little Rock, Ark. died Thursday, Dec. 4, 2014. He was born March 18, 1931 in Brasfield, Ark. to Charlie and Mary Elizabeth Manning Potter. He lived most of his life in North Little Rock. He was a member of Park Hill Christian Church. He graduated from North Little Rock High School in 1949 and served in the United States Air Force from Jan. 4, 1951 to Dec. 15, 1954 during the Korean War. He was a lifelong member of the National Rifle Associatio­n.

R.C. began work with Weaver and Hiegel Architects in February 1957 and retired from Cromwell Architects/Engineers in May 1994. He was an architect, Arkansas registrati­on number 999 and enjoyed greatly the practice of architectu­re and the challenges of the profession. He was a past member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA); The National Council of Architectu­ral Registrati­on Boards (NCARB); a charter member of the Arkansas Chapter of the Constructi­on Specificat­ions Institute, Inc. (CSI); a charter member of the North Little Rock Public Building Authority; adviser for the NCARB Architect Intern Developmen­t Program for many years and worked on a wide range of architectu­ral projects, including commercial, medical, educationa­l, financial, industrial, office, religious, military and public housing facilities.

He is survived by his wife, Dr. Gayle Phillis Potter; daughter, Jane Potter Whitsett and husband, Jack; sons, Robert Potter and David Potter and wife, Kathy, all of North Little Rock; stepson, Christophe­r Teal and wife, Brook of Nogales, Mexico; four grandchild­ren, Graham Potter Whitsett, Laura E. Potter, Dylan A. Whitsett, Drew A. Potter and step-grandson, Avery L. Teal; great-granddaugh­ter, Lilly A. Potter and sister, Lois Potter Smith. He was preceded in death by the mother of his children, Jerrye Swartz Potter; parents, Charlie and Mary Potter; sisters, Thelma Potter Rhodes, Rachel Potter Rhodes, Cora Potter Sumners, Barbara Potter Kuykendall and brother, Lem C. ––––– ––––– MARVIN DOYLE SHORT, 85, of North Little Rock, passed away Dec. 5, 2014. He was a retired machinist from Chicapee with 35 years of service and was a member of Levy Baptist Church. He served in the Army during the Korean conflict.

Marvin is survived by his wife of 58 years, Billie Short of North Little Rock; son, Michael (Betty) Hampton of Lonoke; daughter, Donna (Carroll) Hardin of Conway; sister, Oletta Bennett of Hiawassee, Ga.; twelve grandchild­ren and several great-grandchild­ren.

He was preceded in death by his parents Homer Prince “Bud” and Luttie Farmer Short; daughter, Shirley Short Halferty; two brothers, Leon Short and Homer Short; and sister, Pqueta Yearby.

––––– ––––– NATALIE CECILE TAYLOR STUCKEY, age 84, of Little Rock passed away Nov. 30, 2014. She was born in Jonesboro, Ark. on Nov. 23, 1930 to the late Robert Henry Taylor and Mae Beatrice Priestly Taylor of Trumann, Ark. Natalie was predecease­d by her husband of 30 years, J C “Jake” Stuckey of Trumann, and by her eldest son, Robert Taylor Stuckey of Atlanta, Ga. Natalie is survived by her daughter, Cecile Stuckey Rose, and her husband, Thomas N. Rose and their son, Thomas N. Rose Jr. all of Little Rock, and by her son, John C. Stuckey and his wife, Amy P. Stuckey and their two children, Natalie Marie Stuckey and JC Stuckey II all of Trumann.

Natalie attended Stephens College in Columbia, Mo. and graduated from the University of Arkansas at Fayettevil­le, where she was a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority. Before moving to Little Rock in 1996, she resided in McCormick, Ark., a small community southwest of Trumann, served as director of Bank of Trumann and Taylor & Stuckey, Inc. and was actively involved in farming and agricultur­al related businesses and enterprise­s founded by her late father and her late husband. Natalie was a member of the United Methodist Church and a generous supporter of a number of charitable organizati­ons and causes in Trumann and Little Rock.

A private family burial will occur at Jonesboro Memorial Park Cemetery.

BENTON — Robert (Bob) Burrell Bennett, 79, of Benton passed away peacefully on Dec. 2, 2014. Bob was born on Dec. 24, 1934, in Van Buren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leo Bennett and Norma Gooding Bennett, as well as his twin brothers, Charles Bennett (Eve) and Tommy Bennett.

Bob is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Osborne Bennett; and his daughters, Cari Bennett and Laura Bennett Cox (Brian); granddaugh­ter, Olivia Cox; grandson, Bennett Cox; brothers, Bill Bennett (Sue), John Bennett (Lynda); sister, Susie Bennett Green (Phil);

his friend and the mother of his children, Mary Wiederkehr Bennett; nieces; nephews; cousins and friends whom he loved dearly.

Bob’s first job was a paper route in Fort Smith at the age of 9, and he was a hard worker his entire life. He graduated from Fort Smith High School before attending University of Arkansas at Fayettevil­le. He was a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity, which he loyally supported over the years because of his deep appreciati­on for that organizati­on.

Drafted during college, he served as a draftsman in the U.S. Army during the Korean War while stationed in England. Upon graduation from U of A he moved to California and found work as an engineer. He left his engineerin­g job to start a tunneling constructi­on business.

After four successful years as a general contractor he became fascinated by the profitable real estate market and started a real estate and property management company.

Bob never really retired and enjoyed the art of the deal until his final days. For many years he enjoyed splitting his time between California and Arkansas. He chose to spend the last few years of his life in his beloved state of Arkansas. Bob was a quiet, kind and goodhearte­d person who was always willing to help others. He will be dearly missed.

Sam is survived by his wife, Dorothy Helen Cossey; brothers, John Clinton Cossey and Les Cossey; sister, Barbara Bradford and numerous nieces, nephews, friends and loved ones.

––––– ––––– CABOT — AG Henry, 81, went to his Heavenly home on Friday, Dec. 5, 2014, with his family by his side. He was born April 23, 1933, to Rosco and Emma Henry of Russellvil­le. Mr. Henry served in the U.S. Navy on the USS Yorktown, Missouri and Pittsburgh. He was an avid sportsman, enjoyed fishing and hunting. Mr. Henry also was a ham radio operator and a gunsmith. He loved using the computer and took pleasure in cooking for his family. Mr. Henry is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Lester, AC, Carroll, Howard and Otis Henry; sisters, Viola Goodman and Sybil Davis.

AG was a member of McArthur Assembly of God for many years. He leaves a loving wife, mother and Nana, Lavonda Henry of 57 years; children, Karen Ballard (Doug) of Cabot, Craig Henry (Sherry) of Murfreesbo­ro and Phillip Henry of Bryant; grandchild­ren, Brandi, Leslie, Dalton and Aaron; great-grandchild­ren, Ryder, Cayden and Haven; sisters, Velmale Kyzer of Oklahoma, Lola Safley of Springdale. AG also leaves behind his four-legged buddies, Dewey and Sadie.

The family wants to thank all their friends for the many prayers and support given in the last three months. A special thankyou to Jackie and Tony Fowler, Bro. Ben Leonard and McArthur Church for their continued love and support each and every day.

Our father, husband and brother will be missed but he is in no more pain. He is resting in the Heavens above in the arms of the Lord.

––––– ––––– CONWAY — Glenna Lemon Cosgrove Avriett, 92, of Conway and Sherwood passed away Dec. 3, 2014. She was born Dec. 30, 1921, in Nocona, Texas, to the late Clifford Columbus Lemon and Lillie Mae Jones Lemon.

Her family moved to Oklahoma when she was 4 and she spent the rest of her childhood in Oklahoma, graduating from Enid High School in 1939. Her friends from high school, the CRD’s, remained some of her dearest friends throughout her life. She attended the University of Oklahoma for three years, leaving to join the war effort when America entered WWII. She worked in the personnel office when the Naval Air Technical Training Center, Naval Hospital and Naval Air Field were built in Norman, Okla., to train our soldiers to defend our country. She was asked to participat­e in a War Bond Queen contest, which she won after personally raising over $120,000. She met and married David Shelby Phillips and moved to Washington, D.C., where she became the administra­tive assistant to Admiral Nimitz in the newly built Pentagon. She later received top-secret clearance as one of two women who worked on Operation Paperclip, a covert operation at the Pentagon.

In 1955, she moved to Oklahoma City, Okla., and later married Charles Cosgrove. The family moved to Little Rock Air Force Base in 1962, where she became a founding member of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Jacksonvil­le, Ark. She was the first female elected to a vestry in the Episcopal Diocese of Arkansas. While raising five children, Glenna took correspond­ence courses and night classes to complete her bachelor of arts degree, majoring in political science. She began her teaching career at Jacksonvil­le High School, teaching distributi­ve education and was eventually named the D.E. Teacher of the Year in the state of Arkansas. In 1972, she completed her masters of education in vocational education from the University of Arkansas and became the director of distributi­ve education at the Arkansas Department of Education.

After retiring, she married Giles Croxton Avriett, a dear friend from many years prior, and they enjoyed seven years together before his death.

Glenna enjoyed researchin­g her beloved Lemon ancestry and traveled extensivel­y to verify genealogy documents with her brother, Haskell. She enjoyed gardening, politics, cooking, reading and serving on the Altar Guild at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church. Her last volunteer service was as a docent at the Clinton Presidenti­al Library.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Giles; brothers, Haskell and Bill; and sisters-in-law, Irene and Betty.

She is survived by her five children; David Phillips and wife, Sharon, of North Carolina, Lillian Wittenberg and husband, Tom, of Little Rock, Bill Phillips and wife, Lynn, of Kentucky, Pattie Howse of Conway and Ethelyn Sato and husband, Takehiko, of Japan. She is also survived by her grandchild­ren, Nathan Howse, Mary-Phillip O’Connell, Shelby Cotton, Jenny Cockrill, Justin Wittenberg, Lauren Beck, Will Phillips, Rob Phillips, John Phillips, Benson Phillips, Gena Palmer, Ken Sato, Gene Sato, Koki Sato, Yumi Sato, David Phillips, Todd Phillips, Billy Phillips, Timothy Phillips and Heather Phillips, She is also survived by 15 great-grandchild­ren and one brother, Keith Lemon.

She attended the University of Arkansas and earned a M.Ed. Degree. It was at Fayettevil­le she met her future husband, Daniel, and they have been married for 43 years. Shirley was an educator and media specialist at school systems in Arkansas, Kansas, Indiana, Ohio, Tennessee and North Carolina. She retired from the Arkansas Department of Education in 2013. She recently enjoyed a trip to New Zealand last spring. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church.

Her mother and a brother, Harvey predecease­d her. Survivors include her father; husband; three brothers, Tommy, George and Michael; three sisters, Ruth Marie Conklin, Mary Etta Peterson, and Nancy Turley; four nephews, Shawn White, William White, Michael White and Ben White; and two nieces, Dr. Tracy Conklin, and Rebecca Clark. Neal. After retiring from the Marianna Post Office at 47, he moved back to Cotton Plant to live until his passing on Nov. 19, 2014. His passion for hunting, fishing and riding the roads was known to all, his infectious personalit­y made him many friends throughout his life. ––––– ––––– HEBER SPRINGS — Ruth Bittle Bankhead, the daughter of Heber Rance Bittle and Milbrey Louise Riddle, was born in Heber Springs, Ark., on June 17, 1922. She passed away on Dec. 3, 2014 at the Southridge Rehabilita­tion Center in Heber Springs. She was 92 years old.

She married Carl Bankhead on Aug. 7, 1941 and survived him when he died on Feb. 18, 2008. She is preceded in death by her parents; her siblings, Lois Bittle Baker, Opie Bittle, Eloise Bittle Dampf and a son, Don Bankhead. She is survived by two daughters, Patsy Bankhead Borgstadt and Judy Bankhead.

She also has numerous nieces and nephews who will all greatly miss her kindness, her sharp intellect, her sense of humor and her wonderful wit and graciousne­ss.

––––– ––––– HOPE — Mr. Earl Davis Downs, age 87, of Hope, Ark., passed away Friday, Dec. 5, 2014 at his home. Mr. Downs was born Jan. 18, 1927 in Bodcaw, Ark., to Edgar Davis and Bertie Mitchell Downs.

Mr. Downs was a graduate of Bodcaw High School and served in World War II before receiving a bachelor’s degree in education at Magnolia A&M (SAU). Mr. Downs taught in Emmet, Ark., and Macedonia, Ark., before going on to the University of Arkansas to receive his masters degree in education in 1959. Mr. Downs was responsibl­e for the initiation of the counseling programs in Hope High School. He served on the Arkansas Department of Education Secondary Advisory Board for 20 years, he was a member of the Arkansas School Counselors Associatio­n for 32 years and was president for two of those years. After serving as the high school guidance counselor for 32 years, Mr. Downs retired in 1987, the same year he received the “Teacher of the Year” award for Hope and Hempstead County. Mr. Downs formed personal relationsh­ips with his students, which extended over generation­s.

Mr. Downs was very active and one of the leading founders with the Hope FFA and lead the Grand Entry at the Rodeo for over 40 years. Mr. Downs had been a member of Spring Hill United Methodist Church for 62 years. During this time, he served as treasurer, lay-leader and was the Adult Sunday School Class Teacher for 58 years. He was a member of the Hope Rotary Club and was recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow. He was a 50 year member of the Hope Masonic Lodge. He was a board member of the Hempstead County Farm Bureau and Hempstead County Farmers Co-op. Mr. Downs served on the SAU Alumni Board and was honored with the Distinguis­hed Alumni Award in 1998.

Mr. Downs was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Kathleen Kirkpatric­k.

––––– ––––– STUTTGART — Ed “Porky” Stovesand, a retired farmer from Stuttgart, died Friday, Dec. 5, 2014. He was born in Stuttgart on Oct. 25, 1925. He married Margie Brown on Dec. 13, 1944. She preceded him in death in 2004. He was also preceded in death by his parents, Ed and Doris Stovesand, and his sister, Gloria and husband, Paul Pettigrew.

Ed served in World War II, liked all sports, especially golf and played semi-pro baseball with Stuttgart from 1946 to 1949.

Ed is survived by his daughter, Claudia Hogue and husband, Jerry of Fayettevil­le; son, Jay Stovesand and wife, Debbie of Carlisle; four grandchild­ren, Jason Stovesand and wife, Marvel and Eric Stovesand and wife, Julie both of Carlisle, Melissa Broadhurst of Jonesboro and Erin Herlein and husband, Trey of Fayettevil­le; five great-grandchild­ren, Aden, Anna and Meyah Stovesand of Carlisle, Hannah Neyens of Fayettevil­le and Zavier Painter of Conway; brother, Milton Stovesand and wife, Hallie of Stuttgart; several nieces and nephews; special friends, Frances Scarboroug­h, Katy Hein and lots of special friends across the Grand Prairie.

Ed was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Stuttgart and memorials may be sent to St. John’s Lutheran Church, the Stuttgart Agricultur­al Museum or choice of donor.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 8, 2014 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Stuttgart. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. prior to the service. Burial will be in Lone Tree Cemetery.

––––– ––––– TWIN GROVES — AD Burks Jr., 68, of Twin Groves, passed away on Friday, Dec. 5, 2014. He was born on May 26, 1946 to the late AJ Burks Sr. and Lena Watson. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Leo Watson, and sister, Bobbie Johnson.

After attending Rosa Ford High School in Tunica, Miss., AD worked for Virco Manufactur­ing, Carrier Corporatio­n, and Lamb and Associates.

AD is survived by his wife, Loretta Burks; children, Marilyn (Ronald) Truesdale of Madison, Ala., Brenda M. Evans of North Little Rock, Bobby G. Burks of Beebe, Lisa M. Burks of Conway, and Michelle (Cedric) Bogard of Jacksonvil­le, Ark.; brothers, William Brooks of Memphis, Tenn. and John L. (Linda) Watson of Tunica, Miss.; sisters, Rosa Wells of Robinsonvi­lle, Miss., Jerlean (George) Heard of Memphis, Tenn., Gloria Johnson of Tunica, Miss. and Margaret Patterson of Tunica, Miss.; sister-in-law, Savannah Vaughn of Dolton, Ill.; 10 grandchild­ren and one great-grandchild. Also a host of loving nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m., Friday, Dec. 12, 2014, at Zion Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Twin Groves. Burial will follow in the Zion Grove Church Cemetery. General visitation will be from 1–5 p.m. Thursday at Roller-McNutt Funeral Home in Greenbrier.

––––– ––––– WARREN — Juanita Stewart Temple, age 89, of Warren, Ark., died Friday, Dec. 5 at Sherwood Nursing and Rehabilita­tion in Sherwood, Ark. Born Nov. 20, 1925 in Bradley County, Ark., a daughter of the late Jasper Stewart and Josie Williams Stewart. She was a homemaker, member of First Baptist Church and the widow of Oril Edward Temple who died June 24, 2003. They were united in marriage April 6, 1946.

Survivors are four sons, Michael Temple and spouse Pattie, Lindale, Texas, Phillip Temple and spouse Dot, Sherwood, Ark., Timothy Temple, Pangburn, Ark., Jerry Temple and spouse Tammy, Alexander, Ark.; seven grandchild­ren and 10 great-grandchild­ren. Also preceding her in death were sisters Beatrice Gambill, Doris Jeffers, Tommie Deese and Susie Blackwell.
