Bread goes to 10 cents a loaf Monday. The high price of wheat and the corresponding rise in the price of flour within the last month will be brought home to citizens of Little Rock and Argenta in a more forceful manner than by the headline of the newspapers, according to an announcement made last night by local bakers. Beginning Monday bread will go on sale at 10 cents a loaf. The loaves will be 20 ounces in weight instead of 12 ounces, the weight of the loaves being sold now at five cents.

Pulaski County Rep. R. Ben Allen said he will introduce in the House today a bill to provide a minimum wage of 80 cents an hour in business houses with six or more employes. Allen’s bill confirms rumors of some weeks that a minimum wage bill would be introduced during this session of the General Assembly. The bill does not provide for a number of items the executive committee of the State AFL-CIO Council had in its legislative program for this year, such as a sliding scale beginning with 80 cents an hour the first year, 90 cents an hour the second and $1 the third year.

Robert Stewart was released from the Wrightsville Unit of the Arkansas Department of Corrections on Jan. 26. Later that day, he wound up in the Benton County Jail in Bentonville and he’s happy about the way things have turned out. For the first time, the Benton County Sheriff’s Office is participating in a program that allows counties to make use of state prisoners.

Professional panhandlers and aggressive beggars who city officials say are becoming more of a public nuisance in Little Rock have become the targets of an undercover police task force, officials announced Wednesday. “Even though it’s not a major problem right now, it is a problem that we’re seeing become more egregious,” Mayor Jim Dailey said during a news conference at City Hall. “And we felt it’s better for us to address this on the front end rather than after the fact.” The panhandling task force was formed more than a month ago in response to complaints from residents and business operators who said they felt threatened by beggars who would become angry and aggressive if denied a handout, city officials said.
