100 YEARS AGO Feb. 8, 1915 FORT SMITH — As a precaution against being robbed by highway men on the streets, Miss Edith Hall, art supervisor of the Fort Smith High School, left her watch and bracelet at her home with Mrs. John Fuller, 800 North Thirteenth street, last night. During the absence of the family the residence was burglarized and the watch and a solid gold thimble belonging to Mrs. Fuller were stolen. Porch climbers are believed to be responsible as all doors and windows on the first floor of the residence were locked when the family returned. Windows on the second floor, however, had not been locked. 50 YEARS AGO Feb. 8, 1965 JONESBORO — A Jonesboro man survived the crash of his single engine plane here late Sunday night and walked a half mile to call an ambulance. Merrill H. English was listed in satisfactory condition at a Jonesboro hospital. English, who works for Investors Diversified Corp. here, told an ambulance driver that fog kept him from seeing the runway as he was landing after a trip to Memphis.

Feb. 8, 1990 Attorney General Steve Clark withdrew his Democratic bid for governor Wednesday, saying his campaign was destroyed by revelations of errors in his travel expense records. “After much reflection and discussion with my family and friends,” Clark said, reading from a four-sentence written statement, “I have reached the conclusion that mistakes in my expense records and subsequent news coverage about those mistakes have virtually destroyed my ability to run an efficient and effective campaign for governor.” 10 YEARS AGO Feb. 8, 2005 A weekend barge accident at Montgomery Point Lock and Dam in southeast Arkansas has disrupted traffic on the Arkansas and White rivers, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said Monday. Towboats trying to enter or leave the McClellan-Kerr Arkansas River Navigation System or the White River are being held up until further notice as conditions are re-evaluated, the agency said in a statement. Officials said three towboats were being delayed as of Monday morning. No one was injured, and no spills were reported.
