Cowboys’ big 2nd half upsets ’Hawks

STILLWATER, Okla. — Le’Bryan Nash scored 18 points to help Oklahoma State upset No. 8 Kansas 67-62 on Saturday.

Oklahoma State trailed by 11 at halftime, but the Cowboys held the Jayhawks to 27 percent shooting in the second half. Oklahoma State students stormed the court after beating the Jayhawks at home for the second consecutiv­e year.

Anthony Hickey added 15 points for the Cowboys (16-7, 6-5 Big 12). Phil Forte, Oklahoma State’s leading scorer for the season, had flu-like symptoms and was limited to 29 minutes. He finished with 13 points.

Wayne Selden Jr. scored 15 points, and Perry Ellis, Frank Mason III and Brannen Greene each added 10 points for the Jayhawks (19-4, 8-2), who had won five consecutiv­e.

Oklahoma State overcame an 11-point halftime deficit, and Nash’s spinning left-handed layup put the Cowboys up 59-52 with 7:21 to play.

Kansas rallied back, but a steal by Jeff Newberry led to a fast-break layup by Hickey that gave Oklahoma State a 65-61 lead with 2:32 remaining.

Nash missed the front end of a 1-and-1 with 53 seconds left to give Kansas a chance, but the Jayhawks couldn’t score, and Hickey made a layup at the other end to make it a 6762 game with 20 seconds to play.

In other Big 12 games Saturday, Rico Gathers had 17 points and 17 rebounds, and No. 19 Baylor used a strong start to beat No. 15 West Virginia 87-69. Brogdon, Cavs hold on

CHARLOTTES­VILLE, Va. — Malcolm Brogdon scored

15 points for No. 3 Virginia, which put on a first-half defensive clinic and then withstood a furious rally for a 52-47 victory against No. 9 Louisville.

The Cavaliers (21-1, 9-1) held the Cardinals without a point for the last 10½ minutes of the first half in taking a 2413 lead.

Terry Rozier scored 16 points and Montrezl Harrell 12 for the Cardinals (19-4, 7-3). Louisville got within 50-47 on Chris Jones’ basket with 18 seconds left, but Brogdon converted two free throws at the other end and the Cavaliers held on.

Devils pull another upset

TEMPE, Ariz. — Bo Barnes scored 18 points, including a key three-pointer late, and Arizona State (12-1, 4-6 Pac-12) pulled off a second consecutiv­e home upset over its rival by holding off No. 6 Arizona (20-3, 8-2).

The Sun Devils hit 7 of 15 from three-point range and made 22 of 28 free throws, including some big ones down the stretch.

T.J. McConnell had 25 points and Stanley Johnson added 16 for Arizona.

In another Pac-12 game Saturday, Dwight Tarwater made a three-pointer with 18.9 seconds left and California beat UCLA 64-62, the Golden Bears’ third consecutiv­e victory in the final moments.

Wildcats roll over Hoyas

PHILADELPH­IA — Darrun Hilliard scored 15 points and Josh Hart had 13 to help No. 7 Villanova avenge its worst game of the season with a victory over No. 24 Georgetown.

The Hoyas thumped the Wildcats (21-2, 8-2 Big East) by 20 in the first game on Jan. 19. In the second matchup of the longtime conference rivals, the Wildcats raced to a 17-point lead and never looked back in their fourth consecutiv­e victory.

L.J. Peak scored 15 points for the Hoyas (15-8, 7-5).

In other Big East games Saturday, Kellen Dunham hit 4 three-pointers and scored 24 points, leading No. 22 Butler over DePaul 83-73. … Rysheed Jordan hit 6 three-pointers and scored 25 points, both career highs, to lead St. John’s to an 8466 victory over Creighton. … Steve Taylor Jr. and JaJuan Johnson each scored 14 points as Marquette hung on in the final seconds to beat Seton Hall 57-54 for its first road victory of the season. … Trevon Bluiett and Jalen Reynolds scored 19 points apiece to help Xavier beat Providence 78-69.

Badgers win again

MADISON, Wis. — Bronson Koenig scored a season-high 16 points, Sam Dekker also had 16 and No. 5 Wisconsin (21-2, 9-1 Big Ten) won its sixth consecutiv­e by beating Northweste­rn (10-13, 1-9).

Dekker started the scoring for Wisconsin with a three before later darting through the interior of the 2-3 zone for a dunk. The agile 6-7 forward also converted an alley-oop from Josh Gasser for another slam during a game-opening 21-4 run.

In other Big Ten games Saturday, Malcolm Hill scored 19 points and Illinois withstood a last-minute technical foul to beat Michigan State 59-54. … Andre Hollins scored 18 points and Minnesota held Purdue scoreless for the first five minutes of the second half in a 62-58 victory. … Geno Thorpe scored 14 points, Brandon Taylor 11 and Penn State was able to take advantage of Nebraska’s cold shooting to beat the Huskers 56-43.

Injuries catch up to VCU

OLEAN, N.Y. — Marcus Posley scooped in a six-footer off the backboard at the buzzer, lifting St. Bonaventur­e over injury-depleted No. 18 VCU.

Posley finished with 15 points and Dion Wright scored 17 in a game that St. Bonaventur­e (13-8, 6-4 Atlantic 10) never trailed. It was the second consecutiv­e game Posley has beaten the buzzer.

Terry Larrier scored 15 points for VCU (18-5, 8-2), which lost for the second time in three games. The Rams were missing leading scorer Treveon Graham, who aggravated an ankle injury in a 72-60 victory at George Mason on Wednesday. They’re also minus Briante Weber, who sustained a season-ending knee injury last weekend.

MISSOURI VALLEY

No. Iowa handles Drake

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — Seth Tuttle scored 16 points, Matt Bohannon added 14 and 14th-ranked Northern Iowa handled Drake 69-53 for its 11th consecutiv­e victory.

The Panthers (22-2, 11-1) shot 11 of 20 from three-point range and 64 percent overall.

Northern Iowa raced out to a 16-point halftime lead and was only briefly threatened in the second half. Drake (717, 4-8) closed to 51-42 before allowing three consecutiv­e threes that put the Panthers in control.

Reed Timmer had 10 points for Drake (7-17, 4-8).

In another Missouri Valley game Saturday, Fred VanVleet had No. 16 Wichita State’s first triple-double in 43 years and Ron Baker scored 17 for the Shockers, who pounded Missouri State 78-35.
