Arkansan leads Washington women to bid

Greenwood native Mike Neighbors will lead the Washington women’s basketball team in the first round of the NCAA Tournament against Miami on Friday.

Washington will play Miami at 11 a.m. Friday in Iowa City, Iowa, with the winner facing Iowa or American in the second round Sunday.

The Huskies (23-9) are the No. 6 seed in the East Region, while the Hurricanes (19-12) are the 11th seed.

It’s Washington’s first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2007.

Neighbors, in his third season as the Huskies’ coach, is a former Arkansas assistant and graduated from the school in 1993.

He was also a girls basketball coach at Bentonvill­e and Cabot, leading Bentonvill­e to the state final in 1997.

This season, Washington has beaten Texas A&M, as well as Pacific-12 Conference regular-season champion Oregon State.
