The Arkansas Automobile Club reaffirmed its opposition Saturday to a 1-cent increase in the state gasoline tax, saying the increase would place Arkansas in the category with Washington and Nebraska “for having the record high tax within the continental United States.” Frank M. Publicity on Arkansas flooding is threatening to put a damper on the Memorial Day weekend kickoff of the state’s $2 billion tourism season, a state Department of Parks and Tourism official said Tuesday. “I think half the nation saw the wall of water rushing through Hot Springs and the perception out of state is Arkansas is completely underwater,” said Richard Davies, acting director of the department. The department has been inundated with telephone calls from people in and out of state asking whether they should cancel their holiday weekend plans at state and national parks because of flooding, Davies said.

CLINTON — The Natural Bridge of Arkansas, billed as a natural wonder, is for sale. So, too, are 101 acres of surrounding land abounding in venerable hardwoods and a few stands of pines. The bridge, a sandstone formation stretching 100 feet over a ravine, is more than 3 million years old, according to state Department of Parks and Tourism promotional material displayed in a souvenir shop on the property. Rising 40 to 50 feet above the ground, the bridge sits four miles north of Clinton in Van Buren County, east of U.S. 65 along a sometimes steep road that winds amid trees, forming an emerald canopy at times, before it ends at the bridge property.
