9 from UA score cash for studies overseas
FAYETTEVILLE — Nine graduate students at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville will each receive $ 15,000 for international study through UA’s Sturgis International Fellows Program. They are: Mark Anthony Agana will study city- level climate action plans in Germany. Agana is a doctoral student in environmental dynamics.
Elizabeth Arredondo will study the survival rates of African wild dogs. Arredondo is a biology master’s student and will travel to Kruger National Park in South Africa.
Kaveh Bassiri will work with poets in Iran. Bassiri is a doctoral candidate in comparative literature and cultural studies.
Holly Farris will study the stability of liquid water. Farris, a doctoral student in space and planetary sciences, will travel to Atacama Desert in Chile.
Kaelin Groom will study tourism and changes to the landscape in Petra, Jordan. Groom is a doctoral student in environmental dynamics.
Kathleen Heil will study Berlin’s contemporary dance scene. Heil is a master’s student in creative writing and translation.
Aimee Odum will study at art locales and institutes in Iceland. Odum is a master’s student in ceramics.
Max Thompson will work to translate Kyrygz writer Chingiz Aitmatov’s literature into English. He is a master’s student in creative writing and translation and will travel to Moscow.
Malek Zuraikat will study literary translation at an Arabic university. Zuraikat is a doctoral student in Medieval English literature.
The fellowships come from the Roy and Christine Sturgis Educational Trust, which has also established the Sturgis Fellowship Program and the Sturgis Study Abroad Program at UA.
