100 YEARS AGO June 4, 1915 FORT SMITH — Federal officials here today announced the sixteenth arrest in connection with the alleged illegal operation of a distillery here. The latest arrest is that of S.L. Williams at Winston Salem, N.C., who formerly was an official in the Rush Distilling Company. This distillery, it is charged, was operated without paying the government tax through the bribery of federal officials and employees.
50 YEARS AGO June 4, 1965 Not every student who expected to enter the tenth grade of Hall High School in September will get to. So far, 107 students who asked for Hall, under the new freedom of choice assignment system, have been turned down. They get to make a second choice among Central, Mann or Metropolitan High Schools. This is because Hall already has more students this year than the 1,500 for which it was built in 1957 to accommodate. With the population shift to the west in recent years, Hall’s potential enrollment now far exceeds its capacity.
25 YEARS AGO June 4, 1990 Ralph Forbes alleged at a Sunday afternoon news conference at the state Capitol that his opponent, Kenneth “Muskie” Harris, is a “crack head” and challenged Harris to take a drug test. “This is the biggest joke in town,” Forbes said. “The word on the street is that Muskie Harris is a walking drugstore.” Forbes and Harris, both Republicans, are to face each other in a runoff election June 12 to decide who will oppose Democratic nominee Jim Guy Tucker in the November general election for lieutenant governor.
10 YEARS AGO June 4, 2005 “Filling prescriptions is our business,” reads the sign above the front door, but Friday at the Argenta Drug Company at Fourth and Main in North Little Rock, the business of the day was a celebration. Members of the Argenta Community Development Corp. announced that the Argenta Drug Company property would be one of 12 buildings sharing $1 million for restoration as part of the Home and Garden Television network’s “Restore America: A Salute to Preservation” campaign, now in its third year. The television network will give developers a $50,000 grant, which will go toward the $1.3 million needed for a full restoration.
