Dr. CHARLES DAVID “DUKE” CHASTAIN died suddenly early Wednesday morning, June 3, 2015 in Little Rock. He was 73. Dr. Chastain was born September 13, 1941 in Oxnard, Calif. His family returned to the family farm in Branch ( Franklin County), Ark., when Dr. Chastain was age 3, and he thrived as part of a large and busy family. He graduated from County Line High School and received a B. A. in History and Sociology from Arkansas Polytechni­c College. Dr. Chastain received a Master’s degree in Political Science from the University of Arkansas, Fayettevil­le, and his Ph. D. from Southern

Illinois University. He began his college teaching career at Southeast Missouri State College. In 1972 he began as a Professor of Criminal Justice at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, where he enjoyed a long and distinguis­hed career in education for 39 years. He served 21 years as Chairman of the Department of Criminal Justice. He retired from UALR in 2011.

Dr. Chastain was a champion for education in the criminal justice system, both for members of the law enforcemen­t community and also those who were incarcerat­ed. His activities included active support for the Arkansas prison libraries’ projects, and the re- entry program for Arkansas prison facilities.

Dr. Chastain was preceded in death by his parents, J. B. and Alta Chastain and brothers Tom and Phillip. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Judy Bridges Chastain, and his daughter Sara Chastain. He is also survived by five brothers, James Chastain ( Anita) of Indialanti­c, Fla., Robert Chastain ( Ann) of Caulksvill­e, Ark., General Ronald Chastain ( Pam) of Conway, Ark., Dennis Chastain ( Debbie) of Bentonvill­e, Ark., Kenny Chastain ( Cathy) of Charleston Ark.; four sisters, Jan Bagwell ( Jerry) of Fort Smith, Ark., Dorothy Hogan of Alma, Ark., Sheryl Cox ( Dale) of Rogers, Ark., and Karen Brittenum ( Roger) of Russellvil­le, Ark., and a large extended family.

––––– – –––– On June 2, 2015, ELDON “CHICK” FURRER, entered into eternity, at his home in Little Rock, Ark., surrounded by his loved ones. He had suffered from a prolonged illness of Alzheimer’s. Born in Little Rock, Ark., September 10, 1926, to Adolph Furrer and Verna Bright he lived the majority of his life in Little Rock. At age 17, he joined the U. S. Navy and served in World War ll. He worked in commercial constructi­on for Kirk Constructi­on which allowed him to travel and live in many cities for short periods of time, but always returned to his childhood home. He loved the outdoors and all the beauty God’s nature offered. He was a fisherman, hunter, and gardener. Above all, he was a loving man who judged no one and loved all.

He is preceded in death by his parents and son, Timothy Eldon Jay Furrer. Chick is survived by his wife of 66 years, Jessie Mae Whitmore, who was the love of his life; daughter, Pamela Kay Willard and her husband Van of Lewisville, Texas; daughter- inlaw Rachel Furrer of Little Rock; son, Tad E. Furrer and his fiance’ Tammy Deaton of Little Rock; daughter, R. Katherine Woods and her husband Steve of Texarkana, Texas; and daughter- inlaw, Cyndy Aaron of Greenwood, South Carolina. He had eight grandchild­ren, Tish, Brent, Scott, Mark, Jessica, Steve, Alex, and Brandi; five great- grandchild­ren, Hunter, Conrad, Aaron, Andrew and Addy Anne. He is also survived by his brother, Adolph Jay Furrer of Scott, Ark., and leaves behind many nephews, nieces and friends.

––––– – –––– FRED C. HARVEY, “D. D.”, 61, of Little Rock, departed on June 1, 2015. He was preceded in death by father, George Harvey Jr.; brothers, McKenzie Jr. and Tommy Ross; sisters, RoRhonda Ross and Betty Jo Carthron. Fred C. Harvey has been the Church Administra­tor for Greater Second Baptist Church for 14 years where he oversees the operations of the church under the direction of the Pastor. He is originally from Texarkana, Ark.

He holds a Bacherlor’s Degree in Psychology, is a Certified Prevention Consultant in the State of Arkansas and has an Internatio­nal certificat­ion as a Prevention Specialist. He loves working in the faith community and with the ministries of the Church. He is also the CEO for Greater Second Care Center, Inc., a non- profit organizati­on. During his leisure time he loves boating and fishing. He served in the military December 1972- December 1975. He was ranked Specialist 4. He received an Honorable Discharge, Good Conduct Medal and was a National Defense Service Medal Recipient.

He is survived by wife, Barbara Lynn Harvey; children, DeAundra D. ( Marshall) Nash and Courtney ( Takila) Fred Harvey and Brittany N. ( Joshua) Fleming; mother, Charlean Ross; siblings, Shirley Walker, Jessie Thomas, Maxcine ( George) Harris, Dale Ross, Pernell ( Annelida) Ross, Donell Ross, Tamar ( Charles) Williams, Rodreigo Ross, Jessie Harvey, and Mark Harvey Sr.; six grandchild­ren; host of family and friends.

––––– – –––– RICHARD EUGENE OLSZEWSKI, 73, of North Little Rock died Saturday, May 30th, 2015. He was born in Brooklyn, New York, December 18th, 1941, to Eugene and Anne V. ( Garbacz) Olszewski.

Richard was an Air Force veteran, attaining the rank of Captain, serving eleven years during the Vietnam era. Of those 11 years, one was in Vietnam and three in Thailand. He served as a Missile Launch Officer and Air Intelligen­ce Officer. Richard held a degree from Southern Illinois University in Business Management and also received his Juris Doctorate degree in Law from the University of Arkansas School of Law. He was employed by the State of Arkansas at the time of his retirement.

Richard is preceded in death by his father, wife of 46 years, Vivian Rizzo Olszewski, and son, Justin Olszewski. Survivors will include his children: Alexander Olszewski, Jordana Olszewski, Edmund ( Caroline) Olszewski, and Gilbert Olszewski; grandson, Joseph Underwood, two brothers, Roger ( Nancy) Olszewski and Thaddeus ( Yvonne) Olszewski; and sister, Christine ( Peter Bryant) Olszewski.

––––– – –––– LEE ANDREW ROLLINS, age 80, of Little Rock transition­ed to his heavenly home on June 3, 2015. He was born on September 10, 1934. He was preceded in death by his parents, Reverend Adell Rollins, and Ophelia Leeks Rollins, two brothers, Joseph Leon Peterson and Tyree Leeks, and two sisters, Parthinia Gray- Overton and Hazel Lee Franklin, uncles: Bob and Joe Leeks, and aunt, Annie Leeks Williams. Lee Andrew is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mrs. Bertha Rollins, eight children: David Rollins, Barbara Rollins Pettus, Allan Rollins, Douglas Rollins, Joretta Rollins, Kenneth Rollins, Shawn Rollins ( Lisa), and Leechelle Rollins; two brothers, Eddie Rollins, and Entron Rollins ( Mary), one sister, Queen Ester Oneal, five grandchild­ren: Takila, Jermaine, Sharon, Michael, and Shawn Jr., eight great grandchild­ren, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

He was a member of St. Matthew in Kerr as a child. He later became a member of Greater Second Baptist church under the leadership of Reverend Curtis Rideout who was also a personal friend of Lees’. He served in varies positions in the church. He served on the Deacon Board, the financial committee, drove the church bus, and played guitar for the Male Chorus at Greater Second Baptist Church where he was a member for 51 years. He sang with the Southland Singers Gospel Group as a young adult. He played guitar for the Royal Charioteer­s Gospel Group for about 20 years. Lee also played guitar for the Zion Five Gospel Quartet Group one year.

Lee Andrew was a driver for USPS Contract Mail Hauler, Pat Salmon and Sons for 42 years. He loved his job and enjoyed getting to know the US Postal Family. He also served in US Army.

ALMYRA — Jack J. Kagebein, 90, passed away Wednesday, June 3 at home with his family. He was born November 21, 1924 to Fannie and Franz Kagebein of Almyra where he lived most of his life. His older brother Carl preceded him in death by one day, June 2. During World War II, Jack was called to serve his country and joined in June 1941. As part of the 1st Infantry Division, also known as The Big Red One, he was a gunner who crossed the Rhine River into Germany. At the end of the war he was assigned to the Military Police where he was a personal guard over Hermann Goering at the Nuremburg Trials, his cell, and his hour of exercise.

He came home in June of 1945 and married Mary Ellen Newman in November of that year. They were married 69 years and raised five beloved children, Ronnie ( deceased 2005), Lonnie ( wife Margo), Kyla ( husband Jon), Sharon, and Vicky. He had six grandchild­ren and five great- grandchild­ren.

Jack was a faithful member of Almyra 1st United Methodist Church, a gentleman, and friend to all. He was a lifelong farmer and also a pilot who enjoyed many hours of flying his airplanes, especially his favorite Aeronica Champ.

––––– – –––– BRYANT — Shirley Ann Clements, age 74, of Bryant, Arkansas passed away June 3, 2015 at Saline Memorial Hospice. She was born March 14, 1941 in Belzoni, Mississipp­i to the late James Hardin and Rosa Mae Ingold Hardin. Shirley was a homemaker. She had a tender heart and loved spending time with her family, especially her children, grandchild­ren and great- grandchild­ren. Shirley loved flower gardening, cooking, reading and crossword puzzles and was never without her sweet tea. Shirley loved animals and she knew the way to every dog’s heart was a can of Vienna sausages.

She is preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Don Hardin and a sister, Peggy Reed. ––––– – –––– JONESBORO — Claire Parker Nix of Jonesboro passed away Tuesday, June 2, at the age of 67. The daughter of Judge Olan and Anita Parker, she spent most of her life in her beloved hometown. She graduated from Jonesboro High School, and received a bachelor’s degree from Vanderbilt University and a master’s degree from Arkansas State University.

She spent 28 years with the Jonesboro Public School System as an educator, a social worker and an administra­tor at the Jonesboro Alternativ­e School. She was a dedicated, lifelong member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church. She gave great time and effort to her church, along with several other community humanitari­an programs such as CASA and the Helping Neighbors Food Pantry.

She loved to learn, to create and to explore. She carried countless passions and interests throughout her life — her home, her gardens, her art. She was an amateur archaeolog­ist, a prolific painter and an aspiring carpenter. Her book collection is enviable, her talents diverse, her faith unyielding.

She rarely met a stranger, on two legs or four, and she truly, genuinely treasured her friendship­s, many of which spanned several decades. She loved old houses, convertibl­es, singersong­writers, flowers, cracking pecans, antiques, raw oysters, cannon shoots, fried chicken livers, books, TV mysteries, mints during sermons and dogs. Most of all, she loved powerful children — especially her own. She carved her own pathways. She lived her life. She cared, fiercely, but rarely compromise­d and always stood behind what she believed.

She leaves behind a loved and loving family, cherished friends, and a legacy of service. She is survived by her daughter and her son, her sunshine and her rock; by her beloved stepdaught­ers; her doting brother, his wife and family; by three dear first cousins and their partners and progeny; by many further cousins and kin from the Latourette and Cowles families; by Earline; and by every other person she taught, touched or otherwise benefited in her lifetime. She was an example to all of us, and we are all greater because of her.

CORONADO, Calif. — Dr. Robert L. ( Bob) Reese was fatally injured in a traffic accident on May 11, 2015 in Coronado, Calif. Dr. Reese and his family had moved to Coronado in January after making their home in Tucson, Ariz. since 1976.

Dr. Reese is survived by his wife of 43 years, Linda ( Hill) Reese, children, Hilary ( Reese) Peters and Colin G. Reese, granddaugh­ter, Madeline Reese Peters, brother, William G. ( Bill) Reese, and sister, Mary ( Reese) Finley.

Bob was born in Baltimore, Md. on October 8, 1946. In 1951 he moved to Little Rock, Ark. with his parents, Dr. William G. Reese and Elizabeth ( Bahn) Reese and his older brother. As a young man, Bob was active in scouting and became an Eagle Scout.

Dr. Reese graduated from Hendrix College with a degree in mathematic­s in 1968. While at Hendrix, he was a member of the tennis team and was an avid bridge player. Dr. Reese earned his M. D. degree from the University of Arkansas in 1972. After completing his internship and residency in radiology, Bob and his wife Linda settled in Tucson where he began his practice at Thomas- Davis Clinic. He continued practicing radiology until 2012.

Bob loved all outdoor activities, particular­ly skiing, swimming, tennis, golf, and hiking. He was also very interested in genealogy and was happy to assist others as well. Bob was an involved parent with his children’s activities and sports. He loved playing with his granddaugh­ter Maddie, and it was one of his great joys to be present at her birth.

A memorial service was held for Dr. Reese on May 28, 2015 at Catalina Foothills Church in Tucson followed by a reception. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be given to the Alzheimer’s Associatio­n through alz. org.

A devout family man, Steve grew up duck hunting in the Arkansas Delta with his father, served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, and was an influentia­l contributo­r to the Thoroughbr­ed Horseracin­g Industry. Remembered for his innovation and generosity, he was awarded several patents and gave back to his community as a member of Epiphany Catholic Church and a loyal member of VFW Post # 1170 in Middletown.

He is survived by two daughters, Whitney Greene Conely ( Joseph L. II), Stephanie Kendall Greene ( Alexander Bommarito), grandchild­ren, Joseph “Leo” Conely III, Lucy Conely, sister, Marilyn Greene, brother William E. “Bill” Greene, two nephews Michael Todd Stanley, William Alex Greene and niece Kakki Greene.

––––– – –––– LAVALLETTE, N. J. — Gwendolyn Ransom Freeman of Lavallette, N. J. and Sunset Beach, Haleiwa, Hawaii, went home to the lord on May 30, 2015. She was born in Denmark, Arkansas on Sept. 20, 1923 to the late Guy Robert and Ruby Jewel Ransom. She graduated from Bradford High School in Bradford, Arkansas and attended business college in Memphis, Tenn. Later in life she attended Rutgers University. While in Memphis she met Army Air Corps pilot Lt. Robert Freeman ( Dr. Robert Freeman Sr.) and they were married in Coleman, Texas, on Oct. 9, 1943.

She was a homemaker until her children were of school age, then she worked as the receptioni­st/ bookkeeper for her husband’s medical practice. After she and Dr. Freeman relocated to Hawaii in 1975 she worked at the Allerton Botanical Gardens on the island of Kauai propagatin­g endangered plants. She also began a nursery business called ‘ Pot of Gold.’

She is predecease­d by her husband of 64 years, son, Donald Scott Freeman, and four sisters: Opal Ransom, Leslie Dale Grise, Mable Cannon and Zeda May Hollowell. She is survived by her son Robert Freeman, Jr. ( Cynthia) and grandchild­ren Ashley and Grant; daughter Gwendolyn Ransom Miller ( Tom), and grandsons Keith ( Michelle), Gregory, and Timothy; daughter Judith Storm Freeman; and great- grandson Zachary. One sister, Alma Gene Rooks, lives in North Little Rock. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

In the 1980s Dr. Freeman semiretire­d from his medical practice in Highland Park, N. J. He worked for a company that provided doctors for short- term assignment­s across the United States and the Freemans used the various locations to tour the country. They spent their summers at their beach house in Lavallette, N. J. and, when not working, they wintered in Haleiwa, Hawaii. For many summers her grandchild­ren Ashley and Grant visited Lavallette and loved being ‘ down the shore’ with their cousins. As per her request, she was cremated and a memorial service will be held at a later date.
