‘ Unexpected’ murals

A group of artists will turn a 10- block area of downtown Fort Smith into what the Arkansas Department of Parks and Tourism is calling “the largest outdoor art gallery in the state” during “The Unexpected,” an inaugural mural festival, Thursday- Sept. 12.

The artist line- up includes Vhils, D* Face, Roa, Ben Eine, Maser, Ana Maria and Bicicleta Sem Freio; the curator is Charlotte Dutoit from Justkids, which creates large scale art events, gallery shows and design spaces.

The festival kicks off at 7 p. m. Thursday with a show titled “Printology,” works by countercul­ture artists including Banksy, Invader and Shepard Fairey, on display through the end of October at the new Windgate Arts and Design Building, University of Arkansas- Fort Smith, 5210 Grand Ave.

Chicago poet and activist Malcolm London will headline a spoken word event, 6 p. m. at the university’s Blue Lion, 101 N. Second St. And local artists can paint in an open- air setting during Unexpected Art in the Park, 10 a. m.- 5 p. m. Sept. 12 at Ross Pendergraf­t Park, 200 Garrison Ave.

Irish artists Maser and Conor Harrington collaborat­ed on a large- scale mural in March currently on the wall of Fort Smith’s Boardertow­n Skate Shop, 4900 Rogers Ave.

Throughout the festival, “The Unexpected Headquarte­rs” will provide mural maps and artist informatio­n and sell T- shirts and coffee, 10 a. m.- 6 p. m. daily at 521 Garrison St. Visit the website, Unexpected­FS. com.

Dying City

The University of Central Arkansas Theatre will stage Dying City by Christophe­r Shinn at 7: 30 p. m. today- Saturday and 2 p. m. Sunday in the Black Box Theatre ( Studio 210), Snow Fine Arts Center, UCA, 201 Donaghey Ave., Conway. The drama involves a young therapist who, a year after her husband has been killed in Iraq, confronts his identical twin brother who has shown up at her door unannounce­d.
