Sept. 26, 1915

The Little Rock School Board last night, at the request of County Judge Joe Asher, president of the Pulaski County Fair Associatio­n, declared Friday afternoon, October 22, a half holiday in the public schools to enable the pupils to attend the county fair. Alderman R. C. Powers appeared before the board in session at its office, Eighth and Louisiana streets, with a petition for the creation of an improvemen­t district to grade and macadamize a portion of Johnson street, on which the Woodruff school is located, asking the board to sign it, which request was granted.

Sept. 26, 1965

The first Governor’s Conference on Arkansas Beauty, inspired by President Johnson’s determinat­ion to beautify America, is scheduled to open at 9 a.m. Wednesday in Hotel Marion with a series of panel discussion­s. It will be climaxed that night with a banquet to be addressed by Gov. Faubus. Mrs. Faubus has been selected as honorary chairman of the conference. William H. Bowen, Little Rock attorney, will be the general chairman.

A plan to set a co-worker ablaze inside a North Little Rock restaurant apparently backfired Monday against Jacobon L. Smith, who instead set himself on fire from the neck down, North Little Rock police said Tuesday. Smith, 18, of 1016 I St. in the city’s Dixie Addition remained in critical condition Tuesday in the burn unit at Arkansas Children’s Hospital. A hospital spokesman said Smith suffered burns over 79 percent of his body, 60 percent of them third-degree burns — the most severe.

In less than two weeks, Little Rock Air Force Base at Jacksonvil­le will celebrate its 50th anniversar­y. The air show that accompanie­s the base’s anniversar­y is expected to be the biggest in the base’s history. Some 38 models of military aircraft are expected to be on display. About 20 aircraft teams are to perform, including the U.S. Air Force’s premier demonstrat­ion team, the Thunderbir­ds. Organizers are hoping for as many as 200,000 spectators. Parking and admission are free. The air show is scheduled for Oct. 8 and 9. Gates are open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
