Crockett’s 5 TDs enough for Warriors

- JEREMY MUCK

Damarea Crockett was not going to be denied Friday night.

Little Rock Christian’s senior running back lifted the Warriors in their 5A-West Conference opener against Farmington, rushing for 229 yards and 4 touchdowns on 15 carries in a 62-20 victory at Warrior Field in Little Rock.

Crockett, who has orally committed to Boise State University, scored from the 23, 73, 3 and 1. He also caught a 3-yard touchdown pass.

Little Rock Christian Coach Jeff Weaver, who has coached Crockett since last year when he transferred from Camden Fairview, said he knew the stakes were higher for his running back and the Warriors, who had averaged 48 points per game in nonconference victories against Fountain Lake, White Hall and Jacksonville.

“I said, ‘Hey, baby, it’s conference time,’ ” Weaver recalled telling Crockett. “It’s time to dominate. He usually rises when we need him the most. That’s when he plays his best.”

Crockett, who has rushed for 453 yards and 9 touchdowns this season, certainly made his coach happy Friday night.

“I just wanted to run hard every play,” Crockett said.

Farmington trailed 21-20 with 4:29 left in the first half on senior running back Justice Hobbs’ 3-yard touchdown run, but Little Rock Christian responded with two touchdowns in the next three minutes to take a 35-20 lead at halftime, and added 27 unanswered points in the second half.

Crockett scored from the 3 to make it 28-20. Little Rock Christian added another score after getting the ball back from Farmington. Sanders threw a 31-yard jump pass to senior wide receiver Isaiah Harper for a 35-20 advantage.

“We played well in the first half, but we didn’t show up in the second half at all,” Farmington Coach Mike Adams said. “We didn’t do a good job of tackling No. 16 [Crockett]. They’re a real good football team. They’re going to do well.”

Little Rock Christian added three more scores to invoke the Arkansas Activities Association’s sportsmanship rule, which allows a running clock when a team leads by 35 points in the second half.

Sanders completed 17 of 25 passes for 162 yards with 2 touchdowns.

Farmington senior quarterback Brice Waggle completed 13 of 17 passes for 174 yards and 1 touchdown and 1 interception. Hobbs rushed for 89 yards on 29 carries and 1 touchdown.
