100 YEARS AGO Oct. 22, 1915 COTTER — After an exciting boat chase down White river, Harris Poulson, 23, Reed, Mo., today was captured and placed in jail on charges of burglary and larceny after he had been shot in the head. Last night, it is charged, he broke into the store of J.W. Kesterson and stole three pairs of boots, a suitcase and other articles. Entrance was effected by breaking a plate glass window.

50 YEARS AGO Oct. 22, 1965 North Little Rock School Board Thursday night crossed the final barrier to receiving federal funds for the district by voting 4-2 to speed up desegregat­ion throughout the district. The new desegregat­ion plan meets requiremen­ts outlined Monday in a letter to school administra­tors from the U.S. Office of Education. Francis Keppel, education commission­er, told administra­tors the modificati­ons were necessary to comply with the Civil Rights Act and to qualify the district for federal assistance. 25 YEARS AGO Oct. 22, 1990 BENTON — Robert Shepherd, the state drug policy director, has more than sentimenta­l reasons for wanting the foundering 7th Judicial District Drug Task Force saved. “It’s common knowledge that I-30 is used to transport drugs, and it runs through two counties in the district,” Shepherd said. “Also, as their prosecutin­g attorney has pointed out, this district is surrounded by three of the most populous counties in Arkansas.” 10 YEARS AGO Oct. 22, 2005 RUSSELLVIL­LE — Arkansas Tech University officially broke ground Thursday on the constructi­on of a women’s sports complex, and President Robert C. Brown announced the new facility would be named after Chartwells, a student food services company. The Chartwells Sports Complex for the tennis and softball teams will be on the northwest corner of the campus, near Red Hill Road. The complex will have eight tennis courts, a softball diamond, spectator stands, a facility for locker rooms and coaches offices for the Golden Suns softball and tennis teams. The tennis team now plays and practices at Old Post Park, while the softball team now plays and practices a majority of the time at Fast Pitch World in Russellvil­le.
