50 YEARS AGO Oct. 22, 1965 North Little Rock School Board Thursday night crossed the final barrier to receiving federal funds for the district by voting 4-2 to speed up desegregation throughout the district. Francis Keppel, education commissioner, told administrators the modifications were necessary to comply with the Civil Rights Act and to qualify the district for federal assistance. 25 YEARS AGO Oct. 22, 1990 BENTON — Robert Shepherd, the state drug policy director, has more than sentimental reasons for wanting the foundering 7th Judicial District Drug Task Force saved. “It’s common knowledge that I-30 is used to transport drugs, and it runs through two counties in the district,” Shepherd said. “Also, as their prosecuting attorney has pointed out, this district is surrounded by three of the most populous counties in Arkansas.” 10 YEARS AGO Oct. 22, 2005 RUSSELLVILLE — Arkansas Tech University officially broke ground Thursday on the construction of a women’s sports complex, and President Robert C. Brown announced the new facility would be named after Chartwells, a student food services company. The Chartwells Sports Complex for the tennis and softball teams will be on the northwest corner of the campus, near Red Hill Road. The complex will have eight tennis courts, a softball diamond, spectator stands, a facility for locker rooms and coaches offices for the Golden Suns softball and tennis teams.
