A missed opportunity
Gov. Asa Hutchinson signed a proclamation declaring Oct. 4-10 as “Little Rock Air Force Base Week,” and Oct. 9 as “Little Rock Air Force Base Day,” celebrating the 60th anniversary of the base. To commemorate this event, a 60th anniversary gala was held at the Statehouse Convention Center on Oct. 9. My wife and I, along with nearly 800 members of the community and military, enjoyed a wonderful evening reflecting on the history and the success of both the base and the Central Arkansas region. This became possible because of the foresight and wisdom of community leaders who led the charge to establish an Air Force base in Central Arkansas. The convention center staff did a marvelous job preparing the hall and provided a delicious meal. The governor capped off the evening with an exceptional speech.
Throughout the following week, I reviewed the stream of articles in your paper and never found any mention of this significant milestone. It’s amazing to me that, day after day, it seems the
Democrat-Gazette chooses to report on the negative and unfortunate nature of events as they occur; yet, here was a golden opportunity (missed) to tell a positive and uplifting story.
The partnership between the local communities in and around the base is second to none. An enormous following came together to salute the visionary leaders of the early years, as well as current community and military leaders who continue to forge a highly successful partnership that provides a positive and lasting economic impact to the state of Arkansas. Perhaps in the very near future you can redefine this lapse in coverage and highlight the extraordinary efforts of the planning team, as well as the dedication and commitment of those who were recognized for their sacrifice in defense of freedom.
