Tristan Thompson, Cavaliers agree on five-year, $82 million contract.

-

The Cleveland Cavaliers and freeagent forward Tristan Thompson have agreed in principle on a fiveyear, $82 million contract, ending his holdout. Thompson, who helped the Cavs get to the NBA Finals last season when he filled in for an injured Kevin Love during the playoffs, had been seeking a maximum deal. The sides had been at a stalemate, but reached a verbal agreement Wednesday, less than a week before the season opener. The team hopes to make the signing official today. After Thompson declined to sign a one-year, $6.9 million qualifying offer from the team, it appeared he might be willing to sit out part of the regular season. LeBron James had called Thompson’s holdout a “distraction” during training camp, but he’ll be on the floor as the Cavs try to defend their Eastern Conference title. Thompson averaged 10.8 rebounds in the playoffs last season.

The San Antonio Spurs have waived guard Jimmer Fredette. The Spurs also waived Youssou Ndoye, Keifer Sykes and Deshaun Thomas on Wednesday. The Spurs gave Fredette a partially guaranteed deal in July to come to training camp and provide some outside shooting to a veteran roster that is priming for another title run this season. Fredette was underwhelming, scoring four points in 26 minutes in the preseason. Fredette was the 10th overall pick by Sacramento in 2011 after a standout career at BYU.

Marcus Landry’s chance to make his hometown team ended after the Milwaukee Bucks waived the forward. Landry averaged 2.5 points in four preseason games. The former Wisconsin forward played his last game with Milwaukee on Tuesday at the Kohl Center, the Badgers’ home court in Madison, when the Bucks beat Minnesota 106-88. Landry had 5 points, 3 rebounds and 2 blocks, playing the entire fourth quarter. But the 6-7 Landry’s odds to make a Bucks roster stocked with young talent were slim, especially with forward Jabari Parker expected to return to the floor by mid-November from a left knee injury.
