Cards slip by sloppy Deacons
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Lamar Jackson threw two touchdown passes and Louisville forced five turnovers in the second half in a 20-19 victory over Wake Forest on Friday night.
Jackson was 19 of 26 for 207 yards with scoring throws covering 14 and 22 yards to Jamari Staples for the Cardinals (4-4, 3-2 Atlantic Coast Conference).
John Wolford was 6 of 19 for 131 yards with a 58-yard touchdown pass to Tabari Hines for the Demon Deacons (3-6, 1-5), but he threw three of his team’s four second-half interceptions.
John Wallace kicked field goals of 37 and 39 yards, the latter coming after Chucky Williams’ serpentining interception return and giving Louisville a one-point lead with 1:25 left in the third.
Wake Forest’s Josh Banks blocked Wallace’s 36-yarder with 5:22 left and recovered at the Louisville 45, but Shaq Wiggins intercepted Wolford’s deep pass for K.J. Brent with 3:31 to play.
The Demon Deacons forced a punt with 1:42 remaining but lost 13 yards in four plays. Trevn Young stripped the ball from Kendall Hinton, Devonte’ Fields recovered at the Wake Forest 5 and the Cardinals ran out the clock.
Hinton finished 3 of 11 for 95 yards with 1 interception and a 78-yard catch-and-run touchdown throw to Cortez Lewis .
Staples had 10 catches for 133 yards for the Cardinals, who gained 317 total yards and held the Demon Deacons to 266.
CONNECTICUT 31, EAST CAROLINA 13
EAST HARTFORD, Conn. — Arkeel Newsome had a 90-yard touchdown run in the third quarter to help break open a close game and UConn beat East Carolina.
Newsome, who also had a 2-yard touchdown run, had 244 all-purpose yards, including 179 yards rushing for Connecticut (4-5, 2-3 American). The Huskies had lost five of their previous six games.
Bryant Shirreffs completed 12 of 21 passes for 184 yards with 1 passing touchdown and 1 rushing score.
Marquez Grayson ran for a career-high 87 yards for East Carolina (4-5, 2-3), which has lost three of its past four.
LOUISIANA TECH 42, RICE 17
HOUSTON — Jeff Driskel threw for 320 yards and four touchdowns, Kenneth Dixon (Strong) ran for two scores, and Louisiana Tech scored 28 consecutive points in its victory over Rice.
Trent Taylor had five catches for 142 yards and 2 touchdowns for Louisiana Tech (6-3, 4-1 Conference USA).
Driphus Jackson led Rice (4-4, 2-2) with 180 yards passing and two touchdowns.
HARVARD 14, DARTMOUTH 13
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — Scott Hosch threw two touchdown passes in the fourth quarter, Harvard blocked a last-second field goal and the Crimson rallied to beat Dartmouth for their 21st consecutive victory.
Harvard got on the board with 6:38 remaining when Seitu Smith II caught Hosch’s deep pass on fourth-and-12 and fell into the end zone for a 39-yard touchdown. The Crimson took their first lead with 38 seconds left on Hosch’s 5-yard pass to Justice Shelton-Mosely.
Harvard (7-0, 4-0 Ivy League) kicked it out of bounds on the ensuing kickoff, giving Dartmouth (6-1, 3-1) the ball at the 35. But Alex Gakenheimer had his 46-yard field goal blocked.
