Lake Hamilton runs past Parkview at home

- THE SENTINEL-RECORD

PEARCY — Defense and a strong running game gave Lake Hamilton a key conference victory Friday night.

The Wolves held Little Rock Parkview scoreless for more than 2½ quarters, and their running game set up four second-half field goals by Ethan Johnson in a 33-14 victory at Wolf Stadium.

Lake Hamilton (3-6) moves to 3-3 in the 6A-South with a game at winless Little Rock Hall remaining Thursday. Parkview (5-4), which led the Wolves 14-7 in the second quarter, fell to 3-3 in conference.

Johnathan Buss, whose 109 yards on 24 carries led Lake Hamilton’s 317-yard ground game, scored from four and six yards as the Wolves rallied for a 21-14 halftime lead. Johnson connected from 27 yards out at the end of the third quarter’s opening drive and also kicked field goals of 30, 37 and 42 yards.

Lake Hamilton held Parkview to 39 yards in the second half. Patriots quarterback Koilan Jackson finished 17-for-32 passing for 132 yards after going 13 for 19 for 102 in the first half.

Parkview had a 14-7 lead on two Kolby McNeal touchdown runs and an apparent stop on Denzel McElroy’s interception, but the Patriots were called for roughing quarterback Nash Teague. Pass interference on the next play gave Lake Hamilton first down at its 45, and Bryce Briggs’ 16-yard run after a holding call and and a Parkview offsides penalty moved the Wolves past midfield.

The defense followed with a three-and-out series started by sophomore Randell Nichols dropping McNeal for an eight-yard loss. A pair of nine-yard Buss runs and Jarrod Woodall’s 10-yard gain on a counter trap set up Buss’ six-yard touchdown off left guard. Johnson’s extra point 55 seconds before halftime game Lake Hamilton a 21-14 lead.

Woodall went 59 yards on a counter play for a tying touchdown after Jonathan Scholl recovered an onside kick following McNeal’s one-yard TD. McNeal added a 13-yard score to cap a 99-yard drive.
