‘Looking Back,’ All Souls concerts planned this week

The Symphony of Northwest Arkansas kicks off its 2015-16 season with a “Masterwork­s” concert titled “Looking Back, Looking Forward”, 7:30 p.m. Saturday in Baum Walker Hall at Fayettevil­le’s Walton Arts Center, 495 W. Dickson St.

SoNA principal cellist Kari Caldwell solos in Gabriel Faure’s Elegie; the program will also include the Variations on a Theme by Haydn by Johannes Brahms and Symphony No. 9, “From the New World,” by Antonin Dvorak. Music director Paul Haas conducts. The concert sponsor is Slim Chickens. Haas will give a pre-concert Creative Conversati­on at 6:45 p.m. Tickets are $28-$50. All Souls concert

Faure’s Elegie, with Hendrix College faculty member Aaron Ludwig as soloist, is on the program for the Hendrix College Chamber Orchestra’s All Souls Day concert, 7:30 p.m. Monday in Greene Chapel at Hendrix, 1600 Washington Ave., Conway.

The lineup also includes selections from Orfeo et Eurydice by Christoph Willibald von Gluck with tenor Daniel Foltz-Morrison; “Chaconne” from Les Indes Galantes by Jean-Philippe Rameau; Symphony No. 41, “Jupiter,” by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart; and Shakespear­e Suite (music from William Walton’s scores for film versions of Henry V and Richard III). Karen Griebling conducts. The Rev. J.J. Whitney will present a musical meditation.

Fayettevil­le Requiem

The combined choirs of Fayettevil­le’s St. Joseph Catholic Church and St. Paul’s Episcopal Church will perform Maurice Durufle’s Requiem, with orchestra, at three Northwest and western Arkansas venues:

Organ recital

Gail Archer, college organist at Vassar College and director of the music program at Barnard College, Columbia University, will give a recital at 3 p.m. today at First United Methodist Church, 20 Boyce Drive, Bella Vista.

Her program: Praeludium in g minor, BuxWV 149, by Dieterich Buxtehude; “An Was-serflussen Babylon,” BWV 653, and the Toccata and Fugue in C major, BWV 547, by Johann Sebastian Bach; Sonata in e-flat minor by Horatio Parker; Ascent by Joan Tower; Elegy by Mary Howe; and “Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott,” op.27, by Max Reger. Architectu­re lecture

Marc Manack and Frank Jacobus, faculty members at the Fay Jones School of Architectu­re & Design at the University of Arkansas at Fayettevil­le and principals in the firm of SILO AR+D, Fayettevil­le and Cleveland, will give a lecture titled “Socialight,” 6 p.m. Tuesday in the lecture hall at the Arkansas Arts Center in MacArthur Park, East Ninth and Commerce streets, Little Rock.

5x5 auction

The Arts Center of the Ozarks, 214 S. Main St., Springdale, hosts its 13th annual 5x5 Auction & Jazz Soiree fundraiser, 5:55 -7:55 p.m. Thursday. The exhibition of one-of-a-kind miniature works in various mediums, all 5 inches square, by regional artists will be on display through Thursday before they go on the silent-auction block.

Distinguis­hed lecture

Author, combat veteran and youth advocate Wes Moore, chief executive officer of BridgeEdU, a national initiative focusing on college completion and career placement crisis by reinventin­g the freshman year of college, will give a lecture at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in Benson Auditorium, Harding University, Searcy. Wind concert

Ouachita Baptist University’s Wind Ensemble will give its fall concert at 7:30 p.m. Monday in Jones Performing Arts Center at OBU in Arkadelphi­a. Craig Hamilton will conduct the 36-student ensemble in Gustav Holst’s Suite No. 2 in F major, Three Chorale Preludes by William P. Latham, Suite Francaise by Darius Milhuad, Meditation by Dwayne S. Milburn and Sacred Harp by Jay Bocook.

Musical auditions

Director Monica Clark-Robinson and music director John Willis will cast a multigener­ational, ethnically diverse cast of at least four performers; auditioner­s should prepare a verse and chorus from a song from, or in the style of, the show and provide sheet music for the accompanis­t.
