Steamboats focus of Civil War forum

A symposium on Civil War steamboats, a lecture about David O. Dodd and other activities sanctioned by the Arkansas Civil War Sesquicent­ennial Commission will be available during November in different parts of the state.

“As Much as the Water: How Steamboats Shaped Arkansas,” will be a daylong symposium Thursday at the Arkansas Studies Institute in Little Rock, featuring sessions on steamboats during the Civil War in Arkansas.

“To Arms! To Arms!” A Photograph­ic Exhibit, will be on display through Nov. 14 at the Boone County Library in Harrison.

A Civil War Weekend will be Saturday-Sunday at Historic Washington State Park in Washington, Hempstead County.

A lecture by Nancy Hendricks on David O. Dodd, the 17-year-old who was hanged as a Confederat­e spy by Union troops during the war, will be Monday at the Bob Herzfeld Memorial Library in Benton.

“Presidenti­al Reconstruc­tion: Rebuilding a Divided Nation,” will be the lecture topic Nov. 10 by Carl Moneyhon of the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, at the Newton House Museum in El Dorado.

“The Cause of All Nations: An Internatio­nal History of the Civil War,” will be the lecture topic Nov. 12 by Don Doyle of the University of South Carolina, at the Clinton School of Public Service in Little Rock.
