Conway Christian hits Hazen with a little of everything

HAZEN 30

CONWAY — Jakob Henry completed 17 of 35 passes for 278 yards and 3 touchdowns to lead Conway Christian to a 34-30 victory over Hazen on Friday night in the Class 2A quarterfin­als.

Henry threw two touchdown passes to Jon Mark Wood and another to Brendan Camp as Conway Christian piled up 345 yards of offense.

The Eagles (10-3) will travel to McCrory for a semifinal game Friday with an opportunit­y to reach the school’s first state championsh­ip game.

Logan Penn ran for 144 yards and 2 touchdowns for Hazen (8-5), which played in the Class 2A state championsh­ip game in 2014. Penn also returned a kickoff 80 yards for another score.

Wood caught four passes for 101 yards, while Seth Smith rushed for 111 yards and 1 touchdown on 6 carries.

Conway Christian trailed 16-10 midway through the second quarter when Henry found Camp for a 10-yard touchdown reception to take a 17-16 lead. Later in the quarter, Smith ran 66 yards for a touchdown to make it 24-16.

Henry’s 43-yard touchdown pass to Wood extended the Eagles’ lead to 31-16 in the third quarter. Penn’s 37-yard scoring run later in the third quarter pulled the Hornets to within 31-22, but Will Jackson made a 32-yard field goal to stretch the lead to 34-22.

Jackson also kicked a 30yard field goal for Conway Christian.

ENGLAND 28, DES ARC 22

ENGLAND — Brayden Brazeal threw a 17-yard touchdown pass to Xavier Iverson with 59 seconds left as England (13-0) held on to beat Des Arc (11-2) in a Class 2A quarterfin­al game.

Brazeal threw a two-point conversion pass to Mark Westbrook to give the Lions a six-point lead. Des Arc turned over the ball on downs, and the Lions extended their undefeated season.

The Eagles had taken a 22-20 lead with less than two minutes remaining when Noah Kennedy threw a 30-yard pass to Jacob Adams. The ensuing two-point conversion was good for the Eagles.

Brazeal completed 18 of 31 passes for 250 yards and 2 touchdowns. He also had 125 yards and 2 touchdowns on 21 carries.

B.J. Thompson had 7 catches for 102 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Kennedy threw two touchdown passes for Des Arc, and Trey Lee had a rushing touchdown.

MCCRORY 16, MOUNT IDA 7

McCRORY — Cade Campbell’s 1-yard touchdown run in the final minute sealed McCrory’s victory over Mount Ida (12-1).

Leading 10-7 late in the final quarter, the Lions held McCrory (12-0) on fourth and 7 at the Mount Ida 15, but the Jaguars defense did its part by forcing an incompleti­on on fourth and 5 to set up its final scoring drive.

McCrory gave the ball four consecutiv­e times to Kaigen Rogo, who converted on fourth and 1 before Campbell clinched the victory on his short touchdown run with 42 seconds remaining.

The game was tied 7-7 after the first quarter. Ken Dewitt scored on a 39yard run for McCrory before Mount Ida pulled even on T.J. Wilson’s 1-yard run.

After a scoreless second quarter, Chauncie Green kicked a 21-yard field goal with 6:53 left in the third to give the Jaguars the lead for good, 10-7.

McCrory forced six Mount Ida fumbles.

RISON 45, HECTOR 36

RISON — Rison (11-1) jumped out to a 30-15 lead in the first half against Hector (12-1), then held on to advance next week’s semifinals against England.

Rison running back Bryson Marks, who rushed for 259 yards on 24 carries, scored three of his four touchdowns in the first quarter after Hector spotted Rison a 7-0 lead. Marks went 63 yards for his first touchdown and Spencer Trail’s two-point run gave Rison the lead for good, 8-7.

Marks scored on 37- and 47-yard runs and added the two-point conversion to give Rison a 24-7 advantage.

Quarterbac­k Tanner Gaines scored Hector’s first touchdown on an 8-yard run, then added a 51-yard scoring pass to Cameron Haralson to trim the deficit to 24-15 to end the opening quarter after the two-point conversion. Gaines had 21 completion­s for 379 yards and 4 passing touchdowns.

Jordan Brown scored on a 47-yard run with 9:32 left in the third quarter to give Rison a 38-15 lead before Gaines threw 9 yards to Colton Garrison and 50 yards to Haralson to pull Hector within 38-28 with 2:47 left in the quarter.

Marks sealed Rison’s victory with his fourth touchdown, a 10-yard run with 1:19 left in the fourth quarter.

Gaines threw his fourth touchdown pass with seven seconds left in the game to Jalen Ferguson.
