Rivercrest finds way to get past Glen Rose

- CHUCK LIVINGSTON SPECIAL TO THE DEMOCRAT-GAZETTE

RIVERCREST 20, GLEN ROSE 7

WILSON — Rivercrest came up with just enough big plays in the rain Friday night to edge Glen Rose 20-7 in a Class 3A quarterfinal.

Running backs Cecil Langston and Brayden Wilson combined for 163 yards and 2 touchdowns, and quarterback Kesler Pierce completed a 41-yard touchdown pass to Chris Fetsch in the fourth quarter to lead the Colts (10-3) at Rivercrest Stadium.

Langston rushed 24 times for 87 yards, scoring on a 60-yard touchdown run to give Rivercrest a 7-0 first-quarter lead.

Wilson, who carried 10 times for 76 yards, set up Rivercrest’s second score when he ran 56 yards on first down and finished the drive with a 3-yard run for a 13-0 lead.

“We live by the big plays,” Rivercrest Coach Kelly Chandler said. “They had a good game plan for us.”

Glen Rose (10-3) got back into the game with a fiveplay, 65-yard drive, scoring on Jordan Johnson’s 6-yard run. Johnson rushed 24 times for 96 yards.

That 13-7 score held until late in the fourth quarter when Rivercrest converted the second of back-to-back turnovers into the game’s final touchdown, Pierce’s 41-yard pass to Fetsch.

Glen Rose held the ball for all but 5 plays in the third quarter, but 6 penalties for 53 yards kept them off the scoreboard and the Colts led 13-7 entering the final quarter.

Rivercrest forced two Glen Rose turnovers in a span of three snaps, converting the second turnover into points.

“It usually is whoever wins the turnover battle ends up winning the game,” Chandler said. “We’re glad to be able to beat a good team tonight. We played our hearts out.”

Rivercrest scored first when Langston broke two tackles behind the line of scrimmage before breaking his long touchdown run to give the Colts an early lead.

“I thought tonight our defensive coaches had a great scheme,” Chandler said. “We give up some plays. but tonight the defense carried us.”
