Cubs buy more rooftops

The owners of the Chicago Cubs have purchased three more rooftop businesses across from Wrigley Field. A spokesman for the Ricketts family said Wednesday that a company owned by the family has purchased two Beyond the Ivy rooftop businesses and Sky Lounge Wrigley Rooftop. All three are along West Waveland Avenue across the street from Wrigley’s left-field bleachers. The family now owns nine of the 16 rooftop businesses. A person familiar with the negotiatio­ns said reigning NL batting champion Dee Gordon has agreed to terms on a $50 million, five-year contract extension with the Miami Marlins, avoiding salary arbitratio­n. The person confirmed the deal to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Wednesday because the decision hadn’t been confirmed publicly. Gordon led the majors last season with 205 hits and 58 stolen bases, and he batted .333. He became the first player to lead the National League in batting average and stolen bases since Jackie Robinson in 1949. Gordon also led all NL second basemen in fielding percentage.

Former All-Star pitcher Luis Arroyo has died. He was 88. The New York Yankees said Arroyo’s daughter, Milagros, told the team Wednesday night that he had died earlier in the day in Puerto Rico. She said he had been diagnosed last month with cancer. Arroyo helped pitch the Yankees to the 1961 World Series championsh­ip. The 5-8 lefty was 15-5 with a major league-leading 29 saves that season, then earned another victory in the Series against Cincinnati.
