Campbell new assistant

-

Dan Campbell, the Miami Dolphins ex-interim head coach, is joining the New Orleans Saints to become assistant head coach/tight ends coach, according to reports.

Campbell, 5-7 in his stint as Dolphins coach in 2015, was interviewed for the head coach job that went to Adam Gase.

Campbell played for the Saints in 2009, when current Saints Coach Sean Payton was in his fourth season in that role.

Campbell was promoted to interim head coach after the Dolphins stumbled to a 1-3 start and coach Joe Philbin was fired. Campbell had never been more than a position coach in the NFL when he was elevated.

The Dolphins won their first two games with electrifying performances against Tennessee and Houston and then fell back to earth with a 37-6 loss at New England and plummeted from there.

Owner Steve Ross said the decision whether Campbell would remain on the Dolphins staff would be up to Gase.

Campbell joined the Dolphins in 2010 as a coaching intern and offensive assistant. The third-round pick had an 11-year playing career that included stops with the New York Giants (1999-2002), Dallas (2003-05), Detroit (2006-08) and New Orleans (2009).
