Voice contestant Baber to play at Rev Room

Barrett Baber, the Northwest Arkansas teacher who last month came in third place on NBC’s singing competitio­n The Voice, will perform two nights at the Rev Room — a full band show at 8 p.m. today and what’s called an “acoustic encore” at 9 p.m. Friday. Tickets are $15 each night.

The show at 8 p.m. today is “standing room only.” Both nights will feature an opening act, Dustin Christians­en.

The Casey Donahew Band returns for a show at 9 p.m. Saturday. Admission is $20.

Frontier Circus will perform at 9:30 p.m. today at the White Water Tavern. Admission is $7.

Danny Grace, the Circus “ringmaster,” reports that there will be no opening act and there will be two sets of songs by the band.

The Legendary Shack Shakers, plus opening act The Yawpers, will perform at 9:30 p.m. Saturday. Admission is $12.

The Shack Shakers’ founding member is J.D. Wilkes, who sings and plays harmonica. The band, formed in Paducah, Ky., in the mid-1990s, has released eight albums, the latest of which, The Southern Surreal, came out in 2015.

Opening act The Yawpers, a three-man band from Denver, takes its name from a Walt Whitman poem, “Song of Myself,” with the lines “I sound my barbaric yawp over the roots of the world.” The Yawpers self-released albums in 2012 and 2013, and in 2015, Bloodshot Records released their American Man album.

There will be a jazz symposium, “Jazz: Evolution of an American Art Form and Its Place on Ninth St.,” at 6 p.m., today, followed by a performanc­e at 7:30 p.m., at the

Mosaic Templars Cultural Center. Admission to the symposium is free. Admission to the performanc­e is $10; $5 for students and artists.

Chris Parker will moderate the discussion; panelists will include Amina Claudine Myers (a singer and pianist born in Blackwell); John Cain (a Little Rock-based activist and Ninth Street historian); and Nathan Hood (a Hot Springs-based baritone saxophone player).

At 7:30 p.m., Parker will lead a jazz ensemble which will include bassist Bill Huntington, drummer Yvette “Babygirl” Preyer and Hood.

The event is being presented by the center, the Oxford American magazine and the Clinton School of Public Service.
