Golden Globes statues weren’t all that glittered at soiree
In the marathon that is awards season, the Golden Globes red carpet is where we first see the chic competitors on the journey ahead to the Oscars.
There were styles of all kinds on Sunday, with some surprises and disappointments along the way. Here’s a recap of some of them.
ALL THAT SPARKLES
Lots of ladies came clad in rich monochromatic jewel tones and metallics. Gina Rodriguez exemplified elegance in a voluminous offthe-shoulder navy Zac Posen. So did Kate Winslet, in a superbly fitted halter-style Ralph Lauren. Bryce Dallas Howard stepped up the hue with some sparkle in a Jenny Packham gown she picked off the rack at Neiman Marcus. Rosie Huntington-Whiteley (Saint Laurent), Eva Green (Elie Saab) and Brie Larson (custom Calvin Klein) were among the women who glistened in gold. There also was some lingering love for Pantone’s 2015 color of the year Marsala, courtesy of Olivia Wilde in something sexy from Michael Kors and Zendaya in a tiered Marchesa gown that sadly swallowed up the slender star.
Meanwhile, statement glitz in all its glory dressed up gowns. We saw everything from simple studs to sparkling chandelier earrings, as well as clusters of diamonds stacked on fingers and wrists. But the award for jaw-dropping jewels of the night had to be a tie between Jennifer Lawrence’s dazzling diamond collar and Emmy Rossum’s eye-catching twisted diamond necklace.
AU NATUREL
Before the Golden Globes even started, we saw plenty of globes of another variety. Yes, there was no shortage of down-to-the-navel necklines that kept us holding our breaths hoping we weren’t about to witness another Janet Jackson Super Bowl circa 2004 wardrobe malfunction. Kirsten Dunst’s strappy black Valentino dress took one of the most daring plunges. Sure, these ladies had the figures to pull off these picks, but haven’t we seen these kinds of gowns before? (Yawn … )
Another take on natural was with makeup. Taking some inspiration from the runway for spring 2016, stylists kept bold cosmetics to a minimum.
GUYS’ GLAM GAME ON POINT
Men looked particularly dapper, most opting for the traditional tuxedo. But they let their personality shine through in how they wore it. Pittsburgh’s Wiz Khalifa, accompanied by his mom, Kate “Peachie” Wimbush-Polk, kept his tux by Thom Browne (an Allentown, Pa., native) casual with a silver necktie loosened at the collar. Jason Sudeikis coordinated his socks with his date Wilde’s gown and stayed sporty with a pair of Air Jordan XI “Concord” Lows sneakers.
HITS AND MISSES
A few celebs were in a fashion league all their own, starting with Jennifer Lopez. Usually one to show some skin, she kept covered and classy in a sophisticated mustard Giambattista Valli gown with cape and glittering pointed-toe shoes. Rooney Mara (muted Alexander McQueen), Cate Blanchett (fringed ombre Givenchy) and Kate Bosworth (glimmering Dolce & Gabbana) also stood out for their not-the-norm selections.
Of course, it wouldn’t be a red carpet without some fashion flops — most of which came as surprises. Kate Hudson, a Golden Globes standout last year in a vava-va-voom Versace gown, had us scratching our heads this time in a bandage crop top and slim skirt ensemble by Michael Kors, paired with matching pink platform shoes. Alicia Vikander — hailed as one of the night’s style stars to watch — puzzled in a sparkly white pleated Louis Vuitton that bore a striking resemblance to a pinafore apron. Eva Longoria’s Georges Hobeika gown had just too much going on with its floral appliques, neckline cutouts, open back and band around the waist. Less is more, ladies!
