Cavs hold off Tar Heels

CHARLOTTES­VILLE, Va. — Malcolm Brogdon scored 26 points and No. 3 Virginia used a 16-5 second-half run to break open a tie game and held off No. 7 North Carolina 79-74, the Cavaliers’ 19th consecutiv­e home victory.

Anthony Gill added 15 points and London Perrantes had 12 for the Cavaliers (226, 11-5 Atlantic Coast Conference), who moved within one game of the Tar Heels in the conference standings with two regular season games to play.

Joel Berry II led the Tar Heels (23-6, 12-4) with 21 points, including five three-pointers. Marcus Paige added 13 points and Brice Johnson and Justin Jackson each had 12.

In games involving other ACC teams, Marcus Georges-Hunt scored 23 points and Adam Smith chipped in with 18 to lead Georgia Tech to a 76-71 victory over Boston College, giving the Eagles their 16th consecutiv­e loss. … Michael Gbinije scored a career-high 34 points and Syracuse limited North Carolina State star Anthony “Cat” Barber to one of his lowest-scoring outputs of the season in a 75-65 victory. … No. 12 Miami applied smothering defense led by center Tonye Jekiri to hold No. 11 Louisville without a point for nearly 5 minutes down the stretch to win 7365. … Dwayne Bacon scored 21 points and Florida State snapped a five-game losing streak with a 77-56 victory over No. 23 Notre Dame.
