Bell retires from UACCB after 21 years

BATESVILLE — After a lifetime dedicated to education, Renne Bell retired from the University of Arkansas Community College at Batesville, having served a little more than 21 years in various positions, most recently as faculty secretary.

“You become part of a large family at UACCB,” Bell said. “It’s very comfortable there. I’m very appreciative and enjoyed the years that I’ve had there.”

A graduate of Manila High School, she moved to Blytheville after she and her husband, Charlie, married. She began her career in education at Mississippi County Community College, now Arkansas Northeastern College. She worked there for more than 14 years as a financial-aid officer. While she worked at the college, Bell took a few general-education courses including English and American History, as well as a class in administrative office procedures. However, she had so many students in need of assistance with financial aid that she stopped taking courses to focus on serving the students.

“Mrs. Bell’s career in higher education could be summed up in one word: service. Her service to students was demonstrated through her positions in financial aid, proctoring exams and reading exams to students with disabilities,” said Deborah Frazier, chancellor at UACCB.

Bell and her husband and daughter, Nancy, moved to Batesville in 1994, and Bell joined the staff at UACCB.

At one point, she was the administrative assistant for Frazier, who was then the vice chancellor for academic affairs.

“If you worked with Ms. Renee, it was evident that she loved her family — which included you — and the Delta where she grew up,” Frazier said.

As faculty secretary, Bell maintained supplies for the office equipment, such as copiers, and ensured that faculty had necessary office supplies. Before faculty members had their own computers, Bell typed all tests. She also ordered literature and other materials for UACCB classes.

“With more than three decades of service to education, Ms. Renee’s experience, dedication and willingness to help others will be greatly missed,” said Brian Shonk, vice chancellor for academic affairs. “Ms. Renee was very conscientious about her work. I could always count on her to complete her tasks precisely and timely. We will miss seeing Ms. Renee on campus, but we are happy that she can now spend more time with her family.”

Bell said she looks forward to the freedom and flexibility that come with retirement. She and Charlie are in the process of restoring a yellow 1971 Volkswagen Beetle convertible.

Bell has also served on the board of directors for the United Way and has taught Sunday School at Vine Street Missionary Baptist Church. She said she has taught three preachers and one state representative, James Sturch, in her Sunday school class over the years.

She was honored with a retirement ceremony at UACCB in January, when she was presented a letter from Gov. Asa Hutchison thanking her for her years of service in higher education in Arkansas. Bell will also be a candidate for emeritus status with the college.
