LOIS ZIMMER GOODWIN, born February 11, 1930 passed from this life into Heaven’s flower garden on April 28, 2016.

She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Roy Zimmer and Hattie Gibbons Zimmer; a brother Charles Zimmer; a sister Helen Reutz; a baby girl; and a grandson Clay Goodwin. She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Fay Goodwin; sons Allan (Darce), David, and Dale Goodwin; granddaughters; Sheryl Wales (Trafton), Krystle Hall (Jason), and Lindy Goodwin; and four great grandchildren, Anika and Wesley Wales; and Hayden and Madison Hall; a niece Freda Reutz; a nephew Freddy Reutz; and extended family, Debra Harvey and son Derek. She has also left behind nieces, nephews, and many friends.

Mom and Pop set the standard for what marriage should be. Together they worked side by side for many years running Goodwin & Sons Gro. They lived through good times but also hard and sad times and still had a great love for each other. She loved her little boys with all her heart and was able to enjoy all of her grandchildren and great grands. She also loved her birds and flowers. She had a knack for making things grow. We would tease her about being able to make a rock grow! Mom had a dry sense of humor and also a way of making us do things without us even knowing it. As the matriarch of our family, she will be sorely missed by all. Mom was a member of Martindale Baptist Church for over 65 years. She enjoyed working in VBS and with the children.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Martindale Baptist Church. Graveside services will be 9 a.m. Monday at Pinecrest Memorial Park. Arrangements are under the direction of Roller-Chenal Funeral Home (501-224-8300). Memorials may be made to Arkansas Baptist Children’s Home; 10 Remington Dr, Little Rock, Ark. 72204. Register online at www.Rollerfuneralhomes.com.

–––––❖––––– EMMITT PAUL HEALEY died April 27th, 2016. Things I learned from Dad 1. Love family unreservedly. Dad was the middle child of seven, born August 11, 1925. His parents were Emmitt Earl Healey and “Ivy” Spivey Healey. He learned early that family must support each other in order to survive and thrive in Sedgwick, Arkansas during the depression. His love of nature had its birth in those tough times. Hunting, fishing, and gardening were both necessities and entertainment.

2. Value and nurture friendships.

The friends Dad made as a child remained life-long friends. They tromped the deer woods well into Dad’s eighties. Getting a deer was just a bonus. One friend recently said, “I never had more fun with anyone in my life as I did with Paul Healey.” Dad gave time, effort, and caring to his friendships.

3. Smart trumps education. Smart plus education is the winning hand.

Even though Dad was not formally educated, he was one of the smartest men I know. He left school after the 9th grade to help support his family. He was in the navy at 17 in WWII, was a sharecropper, and was a member of the Army National Guard, retiring as the Supervisor at OMS6 at Camp Robinson. When sent to electrical systems school he was worried, because his formal math training ended in the ninth grade. He was one of the most successful students in the class. He discovered there was one student with an engineering degree. That person became his study partner. Smart trumps education.

4. Empathy and humor resolves more issues than force.

Dad listened carefully when people talked. He listened for their passion and could work with that to resolve issues. He was a mentor to many young soldiers in the National Guard. He was the ultimate story teller, delivering his point with humor.

5. Give everything you have. Don’t hold back.

You shortchange yourself if you do. You may not always succeed, but your regrets will be easier to live with if you feel you have given your best effort. Dad was married twice: first to Joyce Myers in 1945, resulting in four children, nine grandchildren, and numerous great-grandchildren; and to Patsy Scroggins Payne in 2012, resulting in Dad welcoming Patsy’s family into his heart. He gained additional children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Dad was a man who had much to offer and freely gave. He will be sorely missed, but never forgotten.

–––––❖––––– MAGNOLIA — Ralph Christian Weiser, our Hero, Father, Grandfather, Brother, Uncle, and friend to all, died peacefully on April 27, 2016, after a short illness. Ralph was born to Katie and “Bud” Weiser in Cisco, Texas, on January 30, 1925. His big sister, Frances, welcomed him into the family. In 1932, they moved to Gladewater, Texas, where he graduated from high school in 1942. He enrolled in Texas A&M, where he studied mechanical engineering ($25 a semester!) and was drafted and served in World War II. He graduated in 1948. In 1949 he married Lou Burnett, moved to Magnolia, and began working for her father, Dick Burnett, managing his minor league baseball teams and working in the oil fields.

In 1954, Ralph founded Weiser-Brown Oil Company with his brother-in-law, Hughes Brown, and he remained active in this family oil business for 67 years until his death. During these years he was appointed by Governor Rockefeller to the Oil and Gas Commission and was a representative of the Interstate Oil and Gas Compact Commission. He was also appointed by Governor Huckabee to serve on the Governors Economic Development Commission. After reconnecting at a Gladewater High School Reunion, Ralph married his 3rd grade sweetheart Margaret and they lived in Magnolia happily ever after!

Ralph was blessed to be a parent of a child with special needs, Amalia. It was her life that ignited his passion for people with disabilities. He spent his life ensuring that children and adults with special needs in our community have the best programs and services available to them. In the sixties Ralph served on the Board of Columbia Association of Retarded Citizens. Today that program is called Magnolia Specialized Services, which provides programming to over 125 children and adults. For over 35 years, Ralph has been the President of the Board for MSS and has been a board member for over 40 years. He was not only the Board President, but he was a familiar face among students and staff members who knew him on a first-name basis. He never missed a program, dance, or other special occasion. He volunteered for every Special Olympics event for over 30 years, as recently as three weeks ago, where he served as scorekeeper!

Ralph’s faith and love for the Lord prompted him to found Faith Lutheran Church in Magnolia in 1962 where he has held every position in that church. He has been a faithful member of the Boards of the Mid-South and Southwest Districts of the Lutheran Church. He has also been involved in his community as a 60 year member of the Rotary Club; as a supporter of the Magnolia Boys and Girls Club; Magnolia Junior Charity League Follies; Relay for Life; and Partners in Education. For all of his service, he was awarded Citizen of the Year in 1987; Lifetime Achievement Award in 2009; Rotarian Paul Harris Fellow. Ralph joyfully gave to his church, his family, and his community. He lived for the Lord; and God was glorified by his life and will continue to be by the lives he touched.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Katherina and Christian “Bud” Weiser; daughter, Amalia; wife, Margaret; grandson, Wes; and great-grandson Warner.
