100 YEARS AGO Aug. 25, 1916 Condition of Mrs. P.A. Bloom, 30 years old, wife of the manager of the Pulaski Furniture Company, 412 Center street, who was seriously burned Thursday when her clothing was ignited from a trash fire in the rear of the Bloom residence, 1411 Center street, Friday was reported to be improved. In order that she might receive more careful attention, Mrs. Bloom was removed from her home to St. Vincent’s Infirmary Friday morning under the direction of Dr. A.W. Strauss, who dressed her burns Thursday. 50 YEARS AGO Aug. 25, 1966 A press conference is to be held by the three major Democratic candidates for state office this morning, reportedly to announce the appointment of Joe Basore of Cherokee Village as their joint campaign manager. The action, which apparently would be unprecedented, is expected to be announced at 10 a.m. today at the Albert Pike Hotel. James H. Pilkinton of Hope, who won the lieutenant governor nomination in the Democratic runoff after nosing out Basore for second place in the first primary, declined to comment on the ground that it “would defeat the purpose of the press conference.” 25 YEARS AGO Aug. 25, 1991 Health care is becoming a top priority this year in the education of public school students in Pulaski County. The most ambitious project planned involves Little Rock School District students who could be covered by insurance in case they need treatment for alcohol or drug abuse. Officials with the city of Little Rock’s Fighting Back Coalition said last week they expect to give Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Arkansas a $133,500 check to cover the cost of the first premium Monday. 10 YEARS AGO Aug. 25, 2006 A federal judge on Thursday agreed to a request by the state attorney general’s office to continue delaying a federal lawsuit aimed at overturning a state ban on direct sales of wine to Arkansas consumers by out-of-state wineries. U.S. District Judge Susan Webber Wright granted Attorney General Mike Beebe’s petition to keep the case on hold until an appeal of a similar lawsuit filed in state court is decided. Wright froze proceedings last month, saying she would resume hearings once the state case, which targets Arkansas winemakers, was decided. Circuit Court Judge Jay Moody threw out the state lawsuit last week, ruling that the plaintiffs — Moon Distributors Inc., Glazer’s Wholesale Distributors of Arkansas Inc., Central Distributors Inc. and the Arkansas Beverage Retailers Association Inc. — did not have a right to sue.
