GOLF Moore earns Ryder pick Ryan Moore lost his bid to win the Tour Championship finale in extra holes, but picked up an important consolation prize: the fourth captain’s pick and the last slot on the 12-man U.S. Ryder Cup team. U.S. captain Davis Love had previously announced three captain’s picks — J.B. Holmes, Rickie Fowler and Matt Kuchar, who ranked Nos. 10, 11 and 12 in the Ryder Cup standings, respectively. Moore joins Brooks Koepka as the only two rookies on the U.S. team. Europe will carry six rookies. The U.S. team added the fourth pick after a PGA of America task force argued that adding a “hot” player at the last minute could help it reverse course after the Americans lost three consecutive matches and eight of the past 10. Love had said he wouldn’t be unduly influenced by the “hot” factor and had invited three potential picks to practice last week at Hazeltine National Golf Club — No. 7 world-ranked Bubba Watson and Justin Thomas and Daniel Berger. More wrap up Tour cards Grayson Murray won the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Championship and Cameron Smith and Kevin Tway wrapped up PGA Tour cards. Already guaranteed a PGA Tour card with an 18th-place finish on the Web.com Tour’s regular-season money list, Murray closed with a 3-under 68 to beat Smith by a stroke in the third of four events in the Web.com Tour Finals. Tway tied for third with third-round leader Martin Flores. Murray finished at 12-under 272 on Ohio State’s Scarlet Course and earned $180,000 for his first tour victory to jump from 11th to second with $407,963 on the PGA Tour priority list among the 25 card-earners from the Web.com money list. The former Wake Forest and Arizona State player also tops the Web.com Tour Finals money list with $248,000. Smith also shot a 67. After finishing 157th in the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cups standings, the Australian made $108,000 to go from 48th to third with $114,910 in the series race for 25 more PGA Tour cards. Tag Ridings (Arkansas Razorbacks) shot a 75 on Sunday and slipped into a tie for 12th place which won him $19,000. Levy holds on in playoff France’s Alexander Levy won the shortened European Open, beating England’s Ross Fisher with a

birdie on the second hole of a playoff. Levy finished with a 2-under 69, and Fisher shot 64 to match at 19-under 194. The tournament was reduced to 54 holes because of fog delays over the first three days. Levy has three career European Tour victories.

Langdon downs Schumacher

Shawn Langdon raced to his third Top Fuel victory of the year Sunday in the AAA Insurance NHRA Midwest Nationals at Gateway Motorsports Park in Madison, Ill. Langdon powered to a 3.798-second pass at 323.66 mph to beat eight-time season champion Tony Schumacher for his 14th career victory and first at Gateway. The 2013 season champion moved to fourth in the standings after two events in the six-race NHRA Mello Yello Countdown. “We didn’t really have a dominant car in qualifying, but we just kept picking away at it,” said Langdon, also the winner at Bristol, Tenn., and Norwalk, Ohio. “That’s what we’ve been doing since we got those two victories [earlier this year]. The car has just responded well. All in all, this was a great team effort. The whole team did a great job and gave me a great racecar today.” Jack Beckman won in Funny Car, Alex Laughlin in Pro Stock, and Jerry Savoie in Pro Stock Motorcycle. Beckman had a 3.928 at 324.51 in a Dodge Charger R/T to edge

Tommy Johnson Jr. Beckman, the 2012 Funny Car champion, claimed his 24th career victory and second at Gateway. He’s third in the standings. Laughlin sprinted to his first final-round appearance and victory by powering his Chevy Camaro to a 6.611 at 208.68 to outlast Bo Butner. Laughlin failed to qualify for the Countdown. Savoie raced to first victory of the year with a 6.933 at 189.36 on his Suzuki and against

Angelle Sampey. Savoie is fourth in the standings.

HOCKEY

Team Europe advances Tomas Tatar scored his second goal 3:43 into overtime, lifting Team Europe to a 3-2 victory Sunday over Sweden in the World Cup of Hockey semifinals in Toronto. The eight-nation European team will begin a best-of-three series against Canada on Tuesday night. Europe will be heavy underdogs against the host Canadians, who have won two consecutive Olympic gold medals and 14 consecutive games in best-on-best tournaments. That’s just the way the Europeans like it. Few, if anyone, expected the roster of players from the continent’s non-traditional hockey powers to be among the final two in the event created by the NHL and the NHL Players’ Association. With goaltender Jaroslav Halak, the Europeans seem to have a shot to stun Canada. Halak made 37 saves against Sweden.

TENNIS

Zverev stuns Wawrinka Promising German 19-year-old Alexander Zverev won his first tour title Sunday, beating U.S. Open champion Stan Wawrinka in a tight battle in the St. Petersburg (Russia) Open final. Zverev took the first set before Wawrinka responded to draw level. The German was a break down in the decider, but fought back to win 6-2, 3-6, 7-5. Zverev becomes the first man to beat Wawrinka in a tour final since 2013, snapping an 11-match win streak in finals for the Swiss star, who had been trying to win back-to-back titles in his first tournament since the U.S. Open. The loss also ends a 10-match unbeaten run for Wawrinka. Earlier, Britain’s Dominic Inglot and Finland’s Henri Kontinen won the doubles title.
