FOOTBALL
UCA duo recognized
Central Arkansas rover George Odum was named defensive player of the week by the Southland Conference and UCA wide receiver/punt returner Tremon Smith was named special teams player of the week.
Odum had 11 tackles, 2 sacks and 3 tackles for losses in the Bears’ 28-23 victory over Arkansas State last Saturday.
Smith returned a punt 47 yards for a touchdown, also had a 30-yard punt return and an interception, and he broke up a pass in the end zone as time expired.
GOLF
Arkansas women second in Florida
Arkansas women’s team are in second place after Monday’s opening two rounds at the ANNIKA Intercollegiate in Orlando, Fla.
The Razorbacks shot a a 553 (283-270) Monday and trail UCLA by two strokes.
Arkansas’ Maria Fassil is in fourth place in the individual standings with a 137 (71-66). Alan Uriell is tied for seventh with a 138 (68-70). The final round today.
UCA men leading in Memphis
Central Arkansas’s men’s team leads the Memphis Intercollegiate at Colonial Country Club after Monday’s opening two rounds.
The Bears shot a 600 and lead Lipscomb by one stroke. Memphis is third with a 604 and Southern Miss is fourth at 605. Arkansas State is fifth at 606 and UALR is sixth with a 607.
Alvaro Carol Estrems of Central Arkansas leads the individual standings with a 1-under-par 143. Lipscomb’s Dawson Armstrong is second at 144. Arkansas State’s Andrew Huseman is tied for third at 146. Brady Edwards of UALR is tied for fifth at 147. The final round is today.
UCA women tied for ninth in Colorado
Central Arkansas’ women’s team is tied for ninth after Monday’s opening round at the Golfweek Conference Challenge in Wolcott, Colo.
The Bears shot a 301 and are in ninth place. San Diego State (287) leads and Pepperdine (291) is in second.
Brenda Gonzalez of Central Arkansas is tied for ninth in the individual standings with a 73.
The second round is today and the tournament concludes Wednesday.
BASKETBALL
UALR’s Johnson earns preseason honor
Marcus Johnson Jr. of UALR was named to the preseason AllSun Belt Conference second team Monday by collegesportsmadness.com
Johnson was a second-team all-Sun Belt choice a year ago, averaging 12.5 points, 3.1 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game. He shot 47.3 percent from the floor and 46.6 percent on three pointers.
