“Mother! Mother! I want my dear mother!” The howls came from behind the rusty bars in a window of a cell at police headquarters. The frightened wails came from 10-year-old Glenn Sangston of Argenta, one of three members of the self-styled “Dirty Five” gang of boys arrested on a charge of attempted highway robbery at Markham and Rock streets yesterday morning. Sangston and Phillip Fisher and Carl McFarland confessed that Sangston had attempted to snatch a pocketbook from Mattie Colman, negress, at Sixth and Scott streets.

Governor Faubus, who through most of his 12 years in office drew sometimes frenzied cheers when he spoke in the House of Representatives, talked to new legislators there Monday and drew only modest applause. There wasn’t a person in the public gallery to listen to Mr. Faubus tell 55 new House and Senate members that “the best politics is the job best done.” The freshmen legislators-to-be were attentive but not demonstrative, not even when Mr. Faubus declared that the state system should be preserved against federal encroachment.

The North Little Rock City Council on Monday will consider spending about $12,000 in the McCain Mall area to relieve congested traffic during the holiday season. Mayor Patrick Henry Hays has sponsored the proposal to build a two-lane road between the Lakewood Village shopping center and McCain Mall, which are within a few blocks of one another. The proposal calls for a 200-foot asphalt road from McCain Mall at the northwest corner of the Sears parking lot to the northeast corner of the UA Lakewood Village Theater’s parking lot.

Hoping to close a projected gap in next year’s budget, Little Rock’s Board of Directors on Tuesday rebuffed an increase in their taxpayer-funded travel allowance. Combined with eliminating a personal expense account that few of them use, the board’s move redirected about $20,000 away from themselves and toward other city spending projects. “We ought to maintain where we are,” City Director Dean Kumpuris said. Even with that, the 2007 budget covering most city services is still about $550,000 short of expected revenue, down from an earlier projected $1.3 million shortfall.
