100 YEARS AGO Dec. 8, 1916 H.T. Felts was arrested at Levy about 7 o’clock Friday morning by Deputy Constable J.L. Jenkins, charged with theft of an automobile. At 8 o’clock he was tried before Acting Judge W.F. Terral in Argenta municipal court and bound over to await action of the grand jury, and by 8:30 o’clock he was lodged in the county jail. The automobile, a Ford, belonging to Whitney A. Harb of Little Rock, was stolen Thursday afternoon from in front of Mr. Harb’s home, 704 West Second street, Little Rock. 50 YEARS AGO Dec. 8, 1966 Replacing the trusty system at the state penitentiary with paid guards would raise the cost of operation from $1.5 million to as much as $4 million annually, J.D. Wood of Cabot, Penitentiary Board chairman, said Wednesday. Wood said that Winthrop Rockefeller, the governor-elect, who wants the trusty system abandoned and the entire prison system reformed, would find the Penitentiary Board co-operative in any change approved by the legislature. 25 YEARS AGO Dec. 8, 1991 A fire that destroyed a North Little Rock church building Saturday was started to cover up a burglary, officials said. In Little Rock, a firefighter suffered minor injuries while battling another suspicious fire Saturday that burned a vacant duplex. The burglary and fire occurred at the education building of the McCabe United Methodist Church at 610 E. 16th St. in North Little Rock. The building was destroyed about 6 a.m. Saturday. 10 YEARS AGO Dec. 8, 2006 North Little Rock teachers and support staff will get a raise in their Dec. 15 paychecks. Teachers announced their vote tallies Thursday and the support staff announced theirs Monday on a proposal adopted by the North Little Rock School Board in October. Under the plan, the 9,800-student North Little Rock School District will give a 2 percent across-theboard raise to the support staff, a group of employees that includes secretaries and custodians. Each teacher will receive $610 more per year, an amount equal to a 2 percent increase to the base pay, which is what a beginning teacher earns. But it becomes a smaller percentage for teachers with more experience and education.
