––––– ––––– PHYLLIS ANN DUGAN BAILEY joined her heavenly family on Feb. 17, 2017. She was born on Aug. 28, 1928 in Cincinnati, Ohio, and was the second child of Elizabeth Ann Herget Dugan and Daniel Robert Dugan. She was a graduate of St. Mary’s High School in Cincinnati and attended the University of Cincinnati.

She met her future husband, Gladstone William “Bud” Bailey at the Newman Club. They married on Sept. 17, 1949.

Phyllis was predeceased by her parents, her sister and brother-inlaw, Jane and Albert Lehmeyer, and her brother, Fran Dugan.

She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Bud Bailey; her children Ann Bailey Bain (Jim), Bob Bailey (Brenda), and Bill Bailey. She is also survived by her grandchildren Lauren Bailey, Jenna Bailey, Nicole Bailey, Christine Bailey, Tara Strain (Billy), Adam Hall (Stacey), Mary Virginia Grandle (Reid), George Bain (Jenny), and Eleanor Bain. As well as great-grandchildren Bailey Strain, Crawford Strain, Sadie Hall, Olivia Grandle, Mary Brooke Grandle, and Millie Grandle.

Mom was one of the most giving and kind individuals ever born. Even as Alzheimer’s began to claim her memory and mind, she continued to demonstrate care and concern for others. She was always helping others and reaching out to make their lives better. Mom was a great cook who was known for her special dishes such as chocolate chip oatmeal cookies and holiday potato casserole. She was the ultimate volunteer and we all have fond memories of mom helping with our school and church activities.

She was a faithful member of the Catholic Church and considered herself blessed to have been a part of the St. Theresa and Christ the King church family. She will be missed by her church family, neighbors, and numerous friends.

In December 1996, mom completed a memory book for her granddaughter, Tara. In this book she wrote the following in response to the question “What would you change about your life if you could live it over again?”. Her response was: “I would not like to live my life over again. I used to think if I could I would do lots of things differently. Now I know I would not change one thing – my life has been perfect and I have been very happy about everything I have done with it. I am extremely fortunate to have such a wonderful husband and my family are perfect for me. I love all of them and wouldn’t trade anything in the world for them.”

Each of us has been blessed to have been touched by the life of this wonderful woman. We will miss her but she will always be in our hearts and we will see her in each kindness shown to us by others. We know that she is celebrating her reunion with family and friends in heaven — and heaven, just as it was for us on earth, is a better place because mom is there. She died on Aunt Jane’s birthday. We believe that God wanted to have mom in heaven for Jane’s birthday celebration! She was one-in-a-million — we, her children, owe where we are in our lives to this wonderful mother. She supported us in every step of the way — she was our tutor, our mentor, our cheerleader, and the one who looked to us to use our talents to not only prosper — but to make a positive difference. We love you, mom and we will miss you more than words can express!

A Mass of Celebration of her life will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 21, at 1 p.m. at Christ the King Catholic Church, 4000 N. Rodney Parham Road, Little Rock. Memorials may be made to the Phyllis Ann Dugan Scholarship Fund, UALR Office of Development, 2801 South University Ave., Little Rock, Ark. 72204.

––––– ––––– FORT WORTH, Texas — Bryan John Pennebaker was called home to heaven suddenly on Wednesday, February 15, 2017. Service: A Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Patrick Cathedral in Fort Worth with Rev. Luke Robertson T.O.R. as celebrant. Interment: Greenwood Memorial Park. A rosary and eulogies will begin at 2 p.m. Sunday at Thompson’s Harveson & Cole Funeral Home followed by a visitation until 4 p.m. Memorials: The Sisters of Saint Mary of Namur, 909 West Shaw Street, Fort Worth, Texas 76110; ssmnamur@sbcglobal.net.

Bryan was born in Livonia, Mich., to Patricia Gokey Pennebaker and Kenneth Joseph Pennebaker and raised in North Little Rock, Arkansas. He graduated from Catholic High and earned a B.S. in Finance from TCU in 1980. It was at TCU that he met his wife, Leslie Fleming Pennebaker. Bryan began his career as a banker at Fort Worth National Bank and later transitioned into entrepreneurial real estate.

Married for 33 years, Bryan and Leslie have three children, Anne, Kate and Jack. Bryan was immensely proud when his daughters chose to further their educations at TCU. And when his son Jack decided to attend the University of Oklahoma and follow his footsteps in joining Delta Tau Delta fraternity, this loving father was more than happy to fill his closet with an array of Sooner colors and clothing.

Bryan was his family’s hero, anchor, advisor, sounding board, problem solver and cheerleader. Anne, Kate and Jack recall their Dad coaching all of their sports teams and attending every school activity — from French Honor Society gatherings to golf matches. He will always be remembered for his avid love of all things related to TCU, especially Horned Frog sports. He will especially be missed by his Friday morning breakfast group, Sunday golf buddies, fantasy football competitors and longtime friends.

A man of quiet faith, Bryan was a stalwart member of St. Andrew’s Catholic Church and cherished the fellowship of his Bible study group. While his children were in school, he was an active and devoted supporter of St. Andrew’s School and Nolan Catholic School.

The terms selfless, loyal, intelligent and wicked sense of humor arise repeatedly in descriptions of Bryan. Bryan was intensely proud of his children and constantly referred to Anne, Kate and Jack as “his greatest accomplishments.” His inner strength was magnificently evident as he shepherded his family through life’s difficult chapters, including the loss of two siblings and Leslie’s recent cancer diagnosis.

Bryan is preceded in death by his father, sister Dee Dee Pennebaker and brother Mark Pennebaker. Other survivors include his mother Patricia Gokey Pennebaker and sisters Mary Pennebaker and Laura Eppley and her husband Rod.

––––– ––––– GEORGETOWN, Texas — Mary Ellen Lenggenhager Stubbe, 76, died Feb. 9, 2017, at her home in Georgetown, Texas, with her children and sister by her side.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 41 years, Donald Carl Stubbe, an infant son, James Donald Stubbe, and her parents. She is survived by her sons, Richard Stubbe of Houston and John Stubbe of Austin; her daughter and son-in-law, Ellen Stubbe Kester and Steve Kester, also of Austin; her sister and brother-in-law, Sally and Tim Blewett of Little Rock, Ark.; her daughter-in-law, Diana Stubbe of Houston; her sister-inlaw, Nancy Stubbe of Springfield, Mo.; her grandchildren, Christina (Alix) Charles and Marissa Stubbe of Houston; Eliza Stubbe, Kathryn, Sarah and Thomas Kester of Austin; and her nieces and nephew, Ann Stubbe of Palm springs, Calif., Anne Blewett Ansley of Arlington, Texas, and Stan Blewett of Taipei, Taiwan. Since her father was one of 12 children she is also survived by many cousins.

Mary Ellen was born Dec. 15, 1940, in Little Rock, Ark, the first of two daughters of Carl and Dorothy (Harpham) Lenggenhager. She attended Little Rock Central High School, where her mother was a teacher, and was in the first graduating class at Little Rock Hall High School in 1958. She attended the U of A in Fayetteville, where she pledged Delta Delta Delta.

She met Don in 1960 through her childhood friend Linda Neathery Hartell. At the end of their double date, Mary Ellen accidentally left her scarf in Don’s car. Don noticed the scarf at the time and chose not to mention it so he’d have an excuse to see her again. And indeed he did … they were married June 28, 1961, at Sheppard Air Force Base, Wichita Falls, Texas. After their honeymoon in Acapulco they lived at Little Rock Air Force Base until Don finished his tour of duty.

Don’s banking career began at Mellon Bank in Pittsburgh, Pa., and took them to Charlotte, N.C., back to Little Rock, and to Houston. Don then took a position in Singapore, where he and Mary Ellen spent several wonderful years exploring Southeast Asia and the South Pacific. On returning to the States, they lived briefly in Houston and Dallas before settling in Columbus, Ohio. Mary Ellen then started her own career working in the Bridal Registry at five different Marshall Field’s stores in three different cities.

After Don died in Columbus in June 2002, Mary Ellen moved to Sun City to be closer to her family. She was an amazing cook and a prodigious collector of recipes. She dove into genealogy and with Sally traced their family’s roots back to the 1600s. She was a member of Grace Episcopal Church and the Sisterhood of PEO in Georgetown, a philanthropic organization supporting higher education for women. She was a huge fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers … even named her dear cat Ben … and enjoyed playing mahjong and bridge with her many friends in Sun City. After her father had a stroke she cared for him in her home for three years until his death at age 99 in July 2014. She was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia in December of that year.

A memorial service was held Saturday, Feb. 18, at Grace Episcopal Church, 1314 E. University Ave. in Georgetown. Memorial contributions may be made to the church, the IR chapter of PEO, Alice Poage, 531 Mill Pond Path, Georgetown, Texas, 78633 or a charity of your choice.
