100 YEARS AGO Feb. 19, 1917 Arkansas legislators, Little Rock businessmen and others, guests of the First Arkansas Infantry at dinner yesterday at Fort Logan H. Roots, were given a first-hand view of life in the guard. The dinner was an ordinary Sunday dinner, the same as served on the border and at the mobilization camp last summer. Afterward guests were entertained with a demonstration of the Lewis machine gun, with which the machine gun company is equipped, and a concert by the First Regiment band. 50 YEARS AGO Feb. 19, 1967 TEXARKANA — Persons who viewed the room where 11 persons suffered fatal injuries Wednesday when a 105-millimeter shell exploded said Saturday, “It looked like a small war had been fought there.” Ten of the 11 persons in the room at the Lone Star Army Ammunition Plant west of Texarkana died instantly, said Lt. Col. Duane Harris, commander of the plant. The 11th died several hours later. The room, 20 by 30 feet, contained shredded clothing, ripped shoes, torn and blackened walls and shell fragment holes the size of a half-dollar in the door. 25 YEARS AGO Feb. 19, 1992

Parents and advocates of people with disabilities called Tuesday for no cuts in services or flexibility in planning care as the Department of Human Services rewrites the Medicaid waiver program. Mike McCreight, director of the Division of Developmental Disabilities Services, met Tuesday with parents and advocates before a meeting with care providers. “We as parents are not going to allow DDS to run our children’s lives,” Becky Wisdom of Beebe (White County) said. 10 YEARS AGO Feb. 19, 2007 MARBLE FALLS — Randal Phillips walks from the Hub Motel to its neighboring convention center, describing improvements along the way, his wife and business partner, Debbie, at his side. He points out the five buildings they own atop a hill off Arkansas 7 Spur north of Jasper and just south of the Newton-Boone county line. He and his wife alternately recount some of the work they’ve done to the buildings. “This property had been vacant and left rundown for so long, it took us a while just to kind of get it where we could actually open it,” Debbie Phillips explains as they move into The Hub’s restaurant, Scooters. “We still have a lot of things we want to do.”
