Vote no on measure

-

This is my unheard testimony opposing SJR8. I’m not speaking as the director of Arkansas Right to Life but as an individual who has spent the last 30 years working to restore the sanctity of each and every human life in a culture that regards certain people to be less valuable than others. While I have worked with most of you to pass laws that respect and protect human beings from being arbitrarily denied their right to life, I find myself disagreeing with some friends on this issue. I have two major concerns with SJR8 that I have expressed privately and that I now feel compelled to speak about publicly, not as Arkansas Right to Life and not as someone who is opposed to reforms that limit frivolous litigation.

My first concern is the price tag that is placed upon the life of a person who is injured or killed due to the negligence of a nursing home, hospital or acts of any doctor, including abortionists, or someone killed by accident on our highways. SJR8 sets the value of a human life at a price of $250,000 that can be adjusted up or down. As someone who believes that each and every human life is equal, invaluable and irreplaceable created in the image and likeness of almighty God, I believe that is wrong.

Secondly, SJR8 could create an unintended consequence of attracting abortionists to our state that has worked hard to make our state unfriendly to abortion providers. Vote no on SJR8. ROSE MIMMS
