Figures showing definite benefits that Arkansas is receiving from the work of the Agricultural Extension Division have been compiled by B. C. Powell, until recently of Camden, but now vice president of the Southern Trust Company of Little Rock. Mr. Powell formerly was president of the Arkansas Bankers’ Association, and now is chairman of the association’s Committee on Agriculture. His administration as president was distinguished by the amount of time and attention that he devoted to agricultural work.

It was Mrs. Jeannette Rockefeller who noticed that the large seal on the wall of the secretary of state’s office was not identical with the seal on the governor’s stationery. Her husband, the governor, then ordered that an exact and accurate drawing of the state seal be done, at his expense, for use on his stationery, and that of other state officers if they want it. The new drawing of the seal was released Monday. When checked with the description of the seal in the statutes, it, too, apparently was wrong.

An effort to ban panhandlers from soliciting money, work or rides from motorists may mean that North Little Rock would also have to also make some forms of fund raising illegal on city property. Monday, the City Council is scheduled to consider Alderman Ray Heck’s proposed ordinance prohibiting solicitation of motorists on city streets. “My intent is to clean up the city and the image of our city,” Heck said Thursday. “I’m trying to keep the panhandlers off the streets so people aren’t afraid to come out and go shopping at night.”

A bill was filed Tuesday giving more details about the extra $19 million in funding Gov. Mike Beebe wants for public schools. Also Tuesday, the House Education Committee recommended bills aimed at getting a fuller understanding of how much money Arkansas public schools spend on athletics and allowing, in certain circumstances, students to chew gum and eat candy in class. Beebe has been saying that he wanted to give more to public schools than what legislators had recommended, but for weeks he offered no details about distributing the extra $19 million. That amount would bring state public school funding up to $1.9 billion in state general revenue.
