RITA KAY COMPTON, age 69, passed away on February 19, 2017 in Little Rock, Ark. She was born on Dec. 20, 1947, in Fort Smith, Ark.

Rita worked a receptioni­st for 18 years with the Veterans Administra­tion at Fort Roots, in North Little Rock and the medical center Little Rock, Ark.

She is preceded in death by her parents Harold Wear and Norman and Altha Sory; her husband Jack Compton and three sisters. She is survived by her sons Greg Compton of Sherwood, Michael Compton (Tahleigh) of Sherwood; one grandson Hunter Compton; and two sisters, Gayle Orell (Brian) of Cabot and Becky Coaley of Ward.

––––– ––––– PEGGY PRICE CROTZER, 91, of North Little Rock, passed away Feb. 22, 2017. She was a member of Christ Episcopal Church. Peggy was a graduate of North Little Rock High School, and for pleasure, was a avid reader and a world traveler.

Peggy was preceded in death by her husband, Rufus Jasper “R.J.” Crotzer, and her sister, Flossie Marie Zawislak. She is survived by her daughter, Victoria C. Reber and her husband H. Dykes Reber; her nephew Dr. Ron Zawislak and his wife Barbara, and their children Aaron Zawislak and Sydney Clayton. Peggy was very beloved by those she left behind. A private burial was held Friday, Feb. 24, 2017, at Roselawn Memorial Park.

––––– ––––– CURLEY E. FORD, 83, of Little Rock, Ark., passed peacefully on Feb. 20, 2017. He graduated from Philander Smith College. Curley thought school at JC Cook and Eastside High School in Menifee, Ark., and retired from the Department of Workforce. Curley was a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. He is survived by his children, Orlando Ford of Chicago, Ill., and Joe Gregory Hale of Los Angeles, Calif.; brothers, Robert Ford, Hosea Ford (FeEaster), and Leodis Ford; sisters, Glenner Ford (Toney), Lizzie Nichols, Gloria White (Robert), Genice Bowles, Ester Settles and a host of nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends.

––––– ––––– JAMES “BUDDY” HICKS, 55, of Little Rock passed away Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2017. He was born April 20, 1961 in Fort Smith, Ark. He was a member of Life Line Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wonderful companion, Julie Johnson; his bonus daughter, Jennifer Moore; mother, Zoe Hicks Guthrie; sister, Peggy Hicks Powell (Greg); and his brothers, Brad Guthrie (Tammy), Jay Guthrie (Amy), Kip Guthrie (Christi) and other beloved family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his grandparen­ts, father, James K. Hicks and his stepfather, Harold G. Guthrie.

––––– ––––– HAZEL L. MONROE, age 92, of North Little Rock, passed away, Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2017. Born on Jan. 13, 1925 in Harrisburg, Ark., to the late Orville and Barbara Duncan Simmons.

Hazel was a unique and special woman, mother, wife, and friend. A small business owner that included Merle Norman, England, Arkansas and a bait shop in Wright. Hazel always made sure her nails and makeup were done even in the deer woods. Known for wearing her overalls, pistol in her holster, jumping into

the Arkansas River to save a man who couldn’t swim from the top of his truck after it rolled into the river.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, of 30 years, Doris Monroe; three sisters, and one brother.

Hazel is survived by her two daughters, Dianna Neff, of North Little Rock, Donna Watson, of Little Rock; four grandchild­ren, Bobby Joe Turner (Brandi), Denise Diane Wadley, Steven Watson (Regina), and Stacy Watson (Marian); eight great-grandchild­ren; two great-great-grandchild­ren; and one sister, Elizabeth White, of Idaho.

A memorial service celebratin­g Hazel’s life will be held at 3 p.m., on Monday, Feb. 27, 2017 at Roller-Owens Funeral Home, 5509 John F. Kennedy Blvd., (501) 791-7400. A private burial will be held at Mulberry Cemetery in England at a later date.

––––– ––––– ELMER FAY MONTGOMERY, 86, of North Little Rock passed away on Thursday, Feb. 23, 2017. He was born Jan. 30, 1931 in Guy, Ark., to Lavern and Kines Glover Montgomery. He served in the United States Army and National Guard for 42 years; he retired as a Chief Warrant Officer (CW4). Fay is a Korean War Veteran and earned a Purple Heart. He was President of the National Federation of Federal Employees in Washington, D.C. He also earned an Associate Degree from Draughon School of Business. Fay went into the real estate business after retirement from the military, and was a member of the North Pulaski Board of Realtors. He served as a Deacon with the Levy Church of Christ, and was the leader of the Benevolenc­e Committee for many years.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Marian Neighbors Montgomery; sons, Roger, Keith (Dianne) and Patrick Montgomery; granddaugh­ter, Catherine Montgomery; great-granddaugh­ter, Yazmine Kassees and great-step grandchild­ren, Cody and Alexa King. He is also survived by his brothers, Roy, Bob, Jim and Rick Montgomery and numerous other extended family.

Fay was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings, Jerry, Alton, Farrell and Ray Montgomery.

A visitation will be held 5–7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 27, 2017 at Smith-North Little Rock Funeral Home, 1921 Main St. Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2017 at Levy Church of Christ, 5124 Camp Robinson Road, North Little Rock. Burial will be in Copperas Springs Cemetery

––––– ––––– MARY M. SHAW, 72, of Little Rock passed away peacefully on Feb. 23, 2017.

Mary was born Dec. 26, 1944 in Dumas, Ark., to Gracie L. Scott and Robert C. King.

Mary graduated from Fields High School in Gould, Ark., in 1962. After high school, Mary lived in New York where she completed cosmetolog­y training. In 1967, she returned to Arkansas and later moved to Little Rock where she worked as a beautician for a number of years.

She believed in Christ and served Him as a member of West Side Baptist Church and formerly at Greater New Hope Baptist Church.

She is survived by her devoted and loving children, Mrs. Ellana V. Kelly (Rev. Kevin A. Kelly) of Little Rock and Melvin O. Shaw (Cynthia S. Shaw) of Iowa City, Iowa. Other loving survivors include her mother, four grandchild­ren, Nicole Jackson (Dominique), Brittany Crayton (Brian), Erica Kelly, and Kamara Shaw; two great-grandchild­ren, Caden Kelly and Brycen Crayton; five sisters, Ardary Taylor, Katie L. Scott, Queen E. Scott, Sharon Scott, Janice D. Scott; three brothers, James Edward Scott, Roy C. Scott, and Evans Ray Scott; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her father and her brother, Roy L. Withers.

The visitation will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, March 2 followed by the homegoing service at 11 a.m. at Second Baptist Church, 1709 John Barrow Road in Little Rock. ––––– ––––– HERMAN LASKER SNIPES, 73, of Mabelvale passed away on Tuesday, February 21, 2017. He was born in Little Rock on June 19, 1943 to Henry Lasker Snipes and Lillian Marie (Smith) Thompson. He grew up and attended Little Rock Schools. He was a student at Westside Junior High School during the Crisis at Central High and later graduated from there. After graduation he joined the United States Navy where he served in Vietnam and was an ordained Minister. He was a very talented and colorful Tattoo Artist.

Survivors include his son, Wayne Snipes (Anita Kraft) of Shirley, Ark.; daughter, Sonya Robertson of Branson, Mo.; three grandchild­ren, Amber, Kristy and Gavin; two great-grandchild­ren, Farrah and Juan; sister, Jeanette St. Clair of Mayflower, Ark.; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Marianne Snipes; and sisters, Sandra Scott and Norma Dillon.

––––– ––––– SCOTT THOMAS VAUGHN, 65, of North Little Rock passed away Wednesday, February 22, 2017. He was born June 13, 1951 in Bridgeport, Connecticu­t, to Sid and Dorothy Eller Vaughn. He was a graduate of Washington and Lee University School of Law and practiced law for over 40 years, primarily at the Hilburn Law Firm in North Little Rock.

He is survived by his wife and best friend of 30 years, Janice Vaughn; brother, Sid Vaughn (Wendy) of Virginia; niece, Kristen Olson (Will) of New York; great niece, Evie Olson; and his dogs, Sophie and Chewy. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his much loved daughter, Emily Ann Vaughn.

Scott was a man of great integrity, strength and goodness who brought joy and laughter to all who met him. Even those who did not know him were often recipients of his unsolicite­d acts of kindness. Memorials may be made to Pulaski County Humane Society or Arkansas Children’s Hospital.

––––– ––––– BISHOP ERRICK L. WOODS SR., 68, overcame this life and entered into rest on February 22, 2017. He was a man of strong faith who fiercely loved his God. He proudly served his country in the Vietnam War and was a distinguis­hed veteran of the United States Marine Corps First Division. He will be deeply missed by his family and those who loved him.
