About 122 tons of marble around the edge of the roof line of the Capitol are regarded as hazardous, Secretary of State Kelly Bryant said Monday. Bryant said this was the consensus of architects, roofers, stone masons and others who recently have examined the upper levels of the Capitol exterior. Bryant said that an estimate of the cost of repairs will be compiled today and submitted to the Joint Budget Committee. Bryant said that he expected the bill to be fairly large. “I was told that 244,000 pounds of marble will have to be repaired one way or another and steps taken to cure the trouble” Bryant said. “Water damage seems to be the major cause of trouble.”

CABOT — Jury selection began Tuesday in the corruption trial of former Lonoke Police Chief Jay Campbell, his wife and a bail bondsman accused in a wide- ranging case alleging illegal drugs, illicit sex and abuse of a jail inmate- labor program. The morning began with roll call, after which the jury pool was split into three groups of roughly 30 each. Two groups were sent home to return again later, while a third group was directed to the Cabot City Council chambers, across the hall from Cabot District Court. The trial is being held there, instead of at the courthouse in Lonoke, to avoid tying up the circuit courtroom for the length of the trial, which both sides expect will last at least a month.
