Mission Statement “Many of life’s greatest joys come in the simplest forms — a gathering with friends, a walk through the neighborhood, or the sounds of laughter. These joys need not and should not be diminished due to hearing issues. Hearing connects people and helps build relationships. I enjoy being able to improve a person’s quality of life, not only for that individual, but also for those around them. It’s very satisfying for me to see my patients regain their lives and enhance their relationships at home, in the workplace, and socially. As an audiologist, each day presents another opportunity to change someone’s life; what could be better than that?” Joseph B. Turbeville, Ph.D. Expertise and Experience That You Can Trust If you heard only with your ears, then any “expert” might do… however, the truth is, it’s your brain that processes what you hear. Because of that, we take the time to learn about you... your health history and your family history are imperative in recognizing the possible cause and type of hearing loss you may have. Your relationships, your work, your interests and your lifestyle all play important roles in selecting the right solution for your unique circumstances and then programming the hearing devices for maximum clarity of speech and comfort of sound, regardless of your environment. Each of us is as unique as our fingerprints AND hearing solutions should be as well. Doctors Turbeville and Rippy are knowledgeable about not only the ear, hearing, and aural rehabilitation, but neuro-anatomy and physiology of the brain and vestibular systems also. We have advanced Doctor of Audiology degrees from leading Universities (Vanderbilt and Univ. of Florida, respectively) to insure that we are the best that we can be and that you receive unparalleled care. In addition, we participate annually in continuing education training to stay abreast in the latest hearing aid advances and rehabilitative measures. Did you know that many facilities require only minimal education and a few months of on-the-job training to test, diagnose, prescribe, fit, counsel and verify your hearing aids. You should be aware of the difference; why settle for less when your hearing deserves the best that science and technology have to offer! How we Hear Did you know that we hear with our brains? Our ears function like antennae that pick up sound waves and transmit the information via neural pathways to the auditory area of the brain. If this portion of the brain is deprived of sound, over time it can atrophy. As a result of long-term hearing loss, even when the sound is loud enough, it may become distorted due to auditory deprivation. This is termed, “presbycusis”, which is simply an inability to comprehend speech. This gives rise to the adage, “I can hear, but not understand,” a common complaint in today’s busy world. In addition to decreases in understanding ability or speech clarity, one’s tolerance for loud sounds diminishes over time as well. Sounds that normally should be tolerably loud, become almost unbearable. The medical term for this problem is “recruitment”, and means an abnormal growth in loudness function. These two intimidating factors are the primary reasons for failure with hearing devices. Stay ahead of the curve, don’t deprive your brain of sound and stimulation; begin the journey toward better hearing today! You’ll be glad you did! AAC now offers the smallest and most advanced Invisible-In-Canal (IIC) hearing instrument available today. This product is called Soundlens Synergy… tiny, lightweight, and comfortable to wear, it resides deep in the ear canal. Synergy provides natural, clear sound even in the noisiest environments. Remarkably, this sub-miniature device has one million times the computing power of the Apollo 11 rocket of a generation ago. What you hear depends upon whether the speech signal is soft, medium, or loud and whether the environment is noisy or quiet… most people can hear even a whisper easily. It is what I now wear on a full-time basis. I had previously tried various hearing aids from multiple manufacturers with limited success....JBT.
