–––––❖––––– JIMMY RALPH “J.R.” FRANCIS, 87, of Little Rock, entered eternal life on Friday,

March 24, 2017.

Jim was born in

Amity, Ark., on

Aug. 6, 1929 to

Wilford Green and Gracie Lena (Rogers) Francis.

He is survived by his wife of

64 years; one daughter, Cheryl Lane (Milton) of Little Rock; grandchildren,

Tiffany Coyle

(Ryan) of Harrisburg, Pa.;

Kelley Lane and Kimberly Lane of Little Rock; great-grandson,

Hudson Francis

Coyle; brother, Glen Francis (Jen) of Dallas, Texas; and a host of nieces and nephews.

He graduated from Little Rock High School in 1947. He drove a mail truck at night, transporting mail between Hot Springs and Little Rock, while receiving his certification in mechanical and electrical engineering from Little Rock Junior College and International Correspondence Schools.

He retired as Chief of Facilities Management from the Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department after 39 years of service, where he was in charge of all Arkansas rest areas and highways. One of his many efforts was leading the initiative to plant Crimson Clover along Arkansas’ highways, currently in full bloom. Additionally, he wrote a book on herbicide application requirements and a mowing equipment instruction manual, both are still in use today. After retirement, he joined FEMA, where his greatest accomplishment was leading an inspection team in New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina.

Throughout his career, he owned several companies including a heating and air business (notably, outfitting the majority of houses throughout Leawood). He was an excellent draftsman, and spent endless hours drawing plans on his drafting table, developing electrical and mechanical designs for numerous buildings across the state, including North Little Rock Baptist Hospital and dormitories at the University of Arkansas.

He was a man’s man — tall and strong, often clad in his worn leather bomber, with handfuls of peppermints tucked away in his pockets — and yet, sincere and gentle, always prepared with the right thing to say, the softest shoulder to cry on and the best batch of warm and gooey chocolate chip cookies. He loved square dancing, and served with his wife as co-president of the Arkansas State Square Dance Federation in 1983.

He could “fix” anything. He built a hand-crafted home for his family, refurbished an antique, leather-lined Mercedes, rebuilt a Chris-Craft motorboat resurrected from the bottom of the lake, made rich vats of red wine, constructed Tinkertoys, Lionel Trains and Lincoln Logs on the living room floor, and especially mended the bruised knees and broken hearts of his granddaughters, who affectionately referred to him as “G-Daddy.”

On Sunday nights, he went out to dinner with his family, where he never let a good steak or scotch on the rocks go to waste. On summer weekends, he took his family to Lake Ouachita, where he water skied on long wooden skis, played a mean hand of Progressive Rummy and whipped up the creamiest batches of homemade ice cream.

He collected cars and motorcycles (both of which he drove — fast) and was the pilot and owner of multiple airplanes. He traveled with his family to many vacations in his beloved Beechcraft Queen Air, which he piloted alongside his son-in-law.

He was well traveled, with no shortage of adventure stories, many of which starred his big brother, Glen, who shares his love for flying, and is infamously said to have flown him under the Broadway Bridge.

He tended to bountiful gardens, and introduced the whole family to the peach orchard, where he regularly picked armfuls of perfectly ripened peaches that he generously shared.

He had a knack for making handmade biscuits, frying little smokies on the griddle, finding the perfect time to deliver a homemade pound cake, and satisfying the cravings of his sweet tooth.

He was the husband to his loving bride, whom he met while repairing her family’s Singer sewing machine, and the cornerstone of a progressive family of independent women, in whom he instilled his can-do attitude and strong-willed personality.

He was a role model. He was an inspiration to all who knew him. He could do anything he set his mind to.

He attended the First Church of the Nazarene, and was a prime example of a good and faithful servant.

He passed away of old age, having lived a good life, under the care of the good Lord, surrounded by family in the comfort of his home.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, F. Vesto Francis; sister, Ruthie Von Collenberg and infant baby brother.

Heartfelt thanks go to Nurse David, Chaplain Deb, CNA Phyllis and the staff of Arkansas Hospice, as well as his caregiver, Ellen, who provided the best care and warm-heartedness his family could have asked for.

A private funeral was held on Tuesday, March 28 with family, where we celebrated the life of a great man, and the best husband, father, G-Daddy, brother and uncle around, and honored an inspirational role model, whose legacy is remembered, cherished and loved.

Please sign Jim’s online guestbook at www.littlerockfuneralhome.com.

–––––❖––––– AUSTIN — The Heavenly Rock & Roll and Blues Universe increased by one on April 6, 2017. Marshall Golgan, a longtime figure at concerts, and a character in his own right, was called backstage to be with artists he loved, admired and on whom he became an authority. Robert Johnson, Pinetop Perkins, Chuck Berry, Leon Russell, Duane Allman, Janis, Jimi and John are welcoming him in to the Greatest Concert of All Time. A heavenly band that will beat back the Devil. Marshall is now in the thick of it with his long beard, googly glasses and sweet, sweet smile. Hail, hail Rock & Roll!

Marshall Patrick Golgan, age 55, of Austin, Arkansas, was born August 11, 1961 at Fort Dix, New Jersey to Joseph John “Michael” & Phyllis Marie Golgan of Atlanta, Georgia. He had six siblings: Melinda Golgan (died at 6), Michelle Mapstone, Michael Golgan, Mark Golgan, Matthew Golgan, and Maureen Manning. He left nine nieces and nephews. He is survived by his devoted wife, Sharon Sasser Golgan; daughter Lindsey Rebecca Golgan; step-children James Jessee and Mary Lisa Jessee; and countless friends and relatives who loved him and will truly miss him.

Marshall was unique, opinionated, kind, considerate, a true Southern gentleman and an “old soul.” An original hippie who diligently and actively worked to foster world peace and Justice, and a clean and healthy environment. He fought against war and nuclear proliferation. Marshall hated hypocrisy, especially at all levels of government. He was an Army National Guard Veteran who marched proudly in protests against both Iraqi Wars and the Government lies and deceptions that aided their perpetration. He tirelessly demonstrated against the shoddy and collusive Jacksonville Vertac “clean-up” of dioxin and toxic waste that remains to this day a danger.

Marshall made many lifelong friends when he and Sharon owned and operated The Record Museum in Jacksonville, selling used vinyl records, 8 tracks and cassettes, where he became an expert in the genre. They rescued numerous cats and dogs and even goats, chickens and people who needed love and help. Marshall was an accomplished craftsman, especially in all things electronic. When Marshall completed a job, you knew it was perfect.

Marshall was a man ahead of his time who rightfully knew the healing and helpful value of medical and “recreational” marijuana as a salve for pain, and a positive contributing factor to peace, harmony and creativity.

Marshall ultimately succumbed to inoperable brain cancer he believed was brought on by decades of exposure to dioxin-contaminated waste dispersed throughout Jacksonville. He now joins hosts of friends and acquaintances who also had their lives cut short by exposure to the byproducts of Agent Orange production in Jacksonville that furthered immoral Southeast Asian war crimes.

–––––❖––––– LEPANTO — H. C. “Brick” Bradford Jr., also affectionately known as “Bamboo” by so many, passed from this life on Wednesday, April 5, 2017. A journey lasting just shy of 95 years was spent enjoying the things that meant the most to him: faith in God and country, his love of family and friends, and the Texas Aggies!

Brick was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Mildred Bradford; brother, William E. “Billy” Bradford; and his beloved wife JaRue. He is survived by Kay Bradford of Eureka, California, Clay Bradford of Jonesboro, Marla and Gary Slaughter of Allen, Texas, and Kristi and John Rose of Blytheville. He leaves grandchildren Brad Rose of Blytheville, John Charles and Brittany Rose of Blytheville, Cal and Elizabeth Rose of Fayetteville, Rhett Turner of Lepanto, and Grant Goddard of Berkeley, Calif. Brick has his first great grandchild on the way – John Charles “Jack” Rose III.

H. C. was born in Keiser, Ark., on May 12, 1922 to Henry and Mary Lou Bradford and was raised during the Depression on the family farm. After spending his early school years locally, he attended Gulf Coast Military Academy, graduated, and enrolled at Texas A& M University. His college studies were interrupted when his class was called to serve in World War II.

During the war he served in three battle campaigns: The Ardennes/Battle of the Bulge, the Rhineland, and the Central Europe campaign. He was awarded the Bronze Star for Heroism & Valor and received three Bronze Service Stars while commanding heavy artillery in the 84th Infantry Division during the Battle of the Bulge. Brick continued to serve his country in the Army of Occupation in Europe after the war ended.

In 1946, Brick returned to Texas A& M to complete his degree in engineering. While on Thanksgiving break, he met the girl of his dreams, JaRue Martin of Donna, Texas, in the Rio Grande Valley. Their courtship was fast and furious. They met on Thanksgiving, were engaged by Christmas, and married by Easter of 1947.

Brick and JaRue lived in Austin, Texas, for several years where Kay and Clay were born. The family farm beckoned Brick back to Arkansas in the early 1950’s. As the farming operation grew, so did his family when Marla and Kristi completed the Bradford brood.

While Brick farmed in Poinsett County, he continued his engineering practice and designed residential homes and commercial buildings, and provided excavation designs for the Corps of Engineers and local drainage districts, as well as surveys for developers and municipalities. His children participated in the farming operations and from these experiences learned the value of working together as a team that they hope to pass on.

Professionally, Brick was a member and officer of the Poinsett County Farm Bureau, Arkansas Society of Professional Engineers, and was selected by Farm Journal magazine to serve on a national panel representing the Southern region of U. S. farmers. He served his community in many capacities through the years.

Brick retired from farming in 1984, and he and JaRue “hit the road” traveling. They traveled through Europe, including Belgium, France, and Germany. Brick revisited the battlefields many times where he commanded forces during the Battle of the Bulge. The Bradfords were also a host family to a foreign exchange student from Finland, Juha Nummela, who was welcomed as a member of the family.

Brick lived a full and wonderful life, always positive and giving. His life reflected love, integrity, kindness, discipline, adventure and always a purpose of giving to others. As a father, he was the spiritual compass of his family. He led by example as well as word. He expressed daily how proud he was of his children and grandsons and how he felt blessed by them. Brick filled every visit with positive words of love and encouragement, and the family only hopes to pass this legacy on to others.
