SATURDAY’S STARS Four-time jockey champion Ricardo Santana Jr. extended his lead in the standings to three over Ramon Vazquez with two victories Saturday. Santana won the sixth race with first-time starter All Laced Up ($10.60) for trainer Ron Moquett and the 10th with Beachtown Benny ($6.00) for trainer Brad Cox. Santana leads Vazquez, who was winless Saturday, 46-43. Alex Canchari moved into a 41-41 tie for third with Geovanni Franco after winning the fifth race with Gratzie ($11.20).

DERBY DOINGS

Arkansas Derby candidate Petrov worked a half-mile Saturday in :50 for co-owner/trainer Ron Moquett of Hot Springs. Petrov is the only expected Derby entrant to have run in Oaklawn’s first three Kentucky Derby prep races, finishing second in the Smarty Jones Stakes Jan. 16 and the Southwest Stakes Feb. 20 and fourth in the Rebel Stakes March 18. Petrov, with 13 Road to the Derby points, likely needs a to finish at least second in the Arkansas Derby to guarantee himself a spot in the May 6 Kentucky Derby. Petrov is one of at least 10 expected entrants for Saturday’s Derby. Another likely participan­t, Silver Dust, worked 5 furlongs in 59.40 for trainer Randy Morse on Friday. Others reportedly pointing to the Derby include: Classic Empire (32) last year’s 2-year-old champion male, Todd Pletcher trainees Malagacy (Rebel winner, 50 points) and One Liner (Southwest winner, 10 points), Steve Asmussen trainees Lookin At Lee

(12) and Untrapped (34), Sunland Park

Derby runnerup Conquest Mo Money (20), Rebel Stakes runnerup Sonneteer (20), and Rockin Rudy. Malagacy, Classic Empisre and Untrapped are probably assured a spot in the Derby gate, but everybody else will likely need more points. FESTIVAL FOOTWORK Whitmore, also co-owned and trained by Moquett, worked a half-mile in company in :50.20 in preparatio­n for next Saturday’s $400,000 Count Fleet Sprint Handicap. Whitmore, unbeaten in five career sprint races, won the $125,000 Hot Springs Stakes March 11 in his last start.

Tiger Moth worked a half-mile in :48.20 for trainer Brad Cox in advance of Friday’s Grade I Apple Blossom Handicap for older fillies and mares. She ran third in the Grade II Azeri Stakes March 18, the final major local prep for the Apple Blossom.

Benner Island, runner-up in the Grade III Honeybee Stakes for 3-yearold fillies March 11, breezed a half-mile in :49 for Cox in preparatio­n for Friday’s $400,000 Fantasy Stakes.

Texas Chrome, the 2016 Texas Horse of the year, worked a half mile :48.40 in preparatio­n for Saturday’s $750,000 Oaklawn Handicap under four-time defending Oaklawn riding champion Ricardo Santana Jr., who will also have mount in the race.

Chief Cicatriz, a candidate for Saturday’s Count Fleet, covered 5 furlongs in 1:00 under Hall of Fame jockey Calvin Borel.

Wabel, also pointing to the Count Fleet, worked a half-mile in :48.80. He was a March 23 allowance/optional claiming winner.

FINAL FURLONG

Favored All Aboard ($3.20) represente­d the 599th career winner for trainer Moquett in Friday’s second race, according to Equibase, racing’s official data gathering organizati­on. Moquett, who saddled his first winner in 1998, recorded his 500th career victory Feb. 6, 2015, at Oaklawn with Heykittyki­ttykitty. Moquett has 196 career victories at Oaklawn, according to Equibase. He is Oaklawn’s co-fifth-leading trainer this year with 18 victories. … Chris Hartman, Oaklawn’s leading trainer in 2015, also has 18 victories at the meeting after a double Friday. Hartman won the first race with favored Fiesta ($7.20) and third race with favored Hold the Door ($4.80). …. Seven-time Oaklawn training champion Steve Asmussen has a meet-high 32 victories, five more than runner-up Robertino Diodoro. … Danny Caldwell is nearing his fourth consecutiv­e owner’s title with 21 victories. Mike Watters is second with 10. … Betting favorites won 7 of 9 races Friday. … Oaklawn will race four days next week (Wednesday-Saturday) to close the 57-day meeting.
