Long, SIUE third at Ohio Valley
Luke Long, a freshman from Fayetteville, helped lead Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville to a third-place finish Wednesday in the Ohio Valley Conference championship at Robert Trent Jones at the Shoals Golf Club in Muscle Shoals, Ala.
The Cougars finished four strokes behind Jacksonville State for their best-ever finish in the championship. Eastern Kentucky was second, three strokes behind Jacksonville State.
Long tied for fourth individually with teammate Conor Dore with an even-par 216, four strokes behind co-medalists Bobby Hayes of Jacksonville State and Hunter Richardson of Tennessee-Martin.
Long was recently named the conference’s freshman of the year in addition to being selected to the All-OVC team.
Conway’s Roberts runner-up at MIAA
Senior Carson Roberts of Conway helped lead the Washburn University men’s team to a second-place finish Wednesday in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association championship at Sycamore Ridge Golf Course in Spring Hill, Kan.
The Ichabods finished the three-day tournament three strokes behind Central Oklahoma. Boosted by a final-round eagle on the 18th hole, Roberts finished with a 1-over 217, good enough for second place individually, two shots behind the top spot.
Roberts was the runner-up for the MIAA player of the year, while earning first-team all-conference honors.
