Man at LR bar shot, injured, police say

- BRANDON RIDDLE

A shooting at a west Little Rock bar early Monday left a 28- year- old man in serious condition, authorities said.

Officers were called to the West End Smokehouse & Tavern, 215 N. Shackleford Road, at 1: 49 a. m. for a report of a shooting, according to a police report.

Shooting victim Cortez Roy of Little Rock was found lying on the floor with two bullet wounds in his abdomen, the report said. Emergency medical personnel took him to Baptist Health Medical Center in Little Rock, where he remained in serious condition Monday, said officer Michelle Hill, a Police Department spokesman.

The victim was sitting in a corner of the bar when someone entered and asked to play pool for $ 50 bets, according to a report.

Police said the person came in “already highly intoxicated” and had asked several patrons to play before agreeing to a game with Roy.

A verbal altercation ensued, and at one point a woman who had entered with the man was pushed to the floor, police said.

As the man left the bar, Roy followed and was shot when the assailant turned around and fired at least four times with a black semi- automatic

handgun, the report states.

Witnesses said the shooting “happened so fast,” which police say makes it unlikely for the shooter to have gone outside to retrieve the weapon. Police said the bar was full at the time of the shooting, and several people were questioned about what they saw.

A physical description of the assailant was not immediately available.

No arrests had been made at the time of the report.
