–––––❖––––– MICHAEL LAWRENCE BIERLE, MD, moved into the eternal presence of His Savior, Jesus Christ, on May 18, 2017. With The Lord’s strength, Michael fought a long, courageous battle with cancer, and is now perfectly healed in Heaven!

He was born on March 12, 1959, in Yankton, S.D., the fourth of seven children to Donald and Patricia Bierle. Michael suffered health challenges as a child that required hospitalizations away from his family and friends. God used the suffering and pain in Michael’s life for good to serve others so they may be comforted. Many whom Michael touched had no idea that Dr. Bierle had endured so much as a patient himself, but all would say how kind, compassionate and sincere he was in their times of need. He was humble and knew the Lord is in control of all.

Michael’s early childhood challenges did not keep him from living life to the fullest. He was an excellent student while participating in marching band, chorus, school plays, basketball, golf, and baseball. Michael was inspired by the doctors and nurses who cared for him, and chose to minister to others through his own medical career. He completed his undergraduate degree in chemistry and German at the University of South Dakota, pledging his father’s fraternity, Delta Tau Delta. He graduated from USD Medical School in 1985 and completed his Internal Medicine residency at the University of Nevada Affiliates Hospital in Reno, Nevada. He continued his training in nephrology at Loma Linda University in Loma Linda, California. He was board certified in both nephrology and internal medicine and practiced over 30 years. He joined Nephrology Associates in Little Rock in 1992. One of his many professional activities included serving as the Chairman of the Medical Advisory Board of the Arkansas Kidney Foundation.

Michael was married to his soul mate of more than 30 years, Anita (Wendt). Together, they raised two beautiful children, Collin and Lindsey. More than any professional accomplishment, Michael was proudest of his children! He frequently praised Collin’s perseverance and strength in becoming a United States Marine and his passion for our country. Michael also shared a deep bond with his daughter as he encouraged her during her medical training to become the next Dr. Bierle.

Michael shared his passion for sports with his children, and made beautiful memories to cherish by taking them to special events like the Talladega 500 and a Lakers-Grizzlies game. He loved the outdoors and taking his family snow skiing and mountain climbing in Colorado. He also enjoyed hunting and watching his Labrador dogs retrieve. Michael introduced friends and family to the joys of South Dakota pheasant hunting every autumn, and he delighted in the fellowship that it brought. He wanted his friends and family to have the best experience, and many times would not take the opportunity to shoot. He was like that … Michael put others before himself.

Michael participated in Bible Study Fellowship for many years, and he was passionate about sharing God’s Word with others. He and Anita would often discuss what God was teaching them, often reading devotionals and Bible passages to each other while traveling. It gave Michael such great peace and joy that both of his children and daughter-in-law are believers of Jesus Christ and that someday his wife and children will all be reunited in Heaven with him. Michael and Anita attended St. Andrew’s Anglican Church in Little Rock, finding great comfort in God’s Word.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to Dr. Brad Baltz, who lovingly cared for Michael and his family. We are forever grateful and thankful to Dr. Baltz and his compassionate staff. We would also extend our gratefulness to a special Hospice nurse, Geraldine Clarke, who cared for Michael like he was her own in his final hours on earth. We feel so blessed!

Michael was preceded in death by his paternal and maternal grandparents, his parents, five uncles and aunts. He is survived by his beloved wife Anita, his son Collin (Cristena) of Maumelle and daughter Lindsey of Corinth, Mississippi, as well as one brother, five sisters, and many nieces and nephews. He will be dearly missed by his friends, colleagues, patients and their families. Our hearts are broken, but we know we will see Michael again! He is no longer in pain and is in the presence of Jesus Christ, his personal Savior.

The visitation will be held from 4-6 p.m. on Sunday, May 21 at Ruebel Funeral Home, 6313 W Markham St., Little Rock. A celebration of Michael’s life will be Monday, May 22 at 11 a.m. at St. Andrews Anglican Church, 8300 Kanis Road, Little Rock, and interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park. Donations may be made to Bible Study Fellowship, 10001 Huebner Road, San Antonio, Texas, USA 78258-4019 or www.bsfinternational.org. Arrangements are under the direction of Ruebel Funeral Home, www.ruebelfuneralhome.com.

IRIS LEE CLARK, 92, of Little Rock and Hot Springs, born August 28, 1924, passed away Thursday, May 18, 2017 at home. Iris was born in Glendale, Arkansas, to Robert Lee and Callie Raney Rodgers. She completed school in Glendale where she was an outstanding basketball player. She worked at Ben Pearson Archery, the Pine Bluff Commercial, spent many years as a housewife; and, served at Lions’ World Services for the Blind where she was a dormitory supervisor until she retired in 1994. She was selected as employee of the year in 1990.

Iris loved to garden and after her retirement, continued gardening for 20 more years at the Pulaski Garden Center at Two Rivers Park. No one could grow vegetables and flowers like Iris. Many relied on her for advice and assistance, and she gladly offered her wisdom, as well as her bounty, to fellow gardeners.

Everyone loved Iris. She served for 13 years as the door duchess at the Little Rock Bop Club. Never a dancer herself, she admired others’ grace and ability. People of all ages in the dance community from throughout the region became her lifelong friends. ROY RICHMOND GRIFFIN of Little Rock, departed this life to join his beloved wife of 61 years and 13 days, Bertha (Bert) Cooper Griffin, on May 18, 2017. He was born on April 3, 1918, in Anderson, Ala., During the 99 years of his life he was an inspiration to many; a beloved father to Jackie Griffin, Susan Griffin (Tom Kilgore), and JoAnn Kirchner (Jeff); cherished grandfather to Angela Kelly, Walt Kelly (JeanAnne), Christen Kirchner, and Jessica Thein (Jason); and adored great-grandfather to Griffin Melson, Noah Melson, Aiden Kelly, Cooper Kelly, Phoenix Erlmann, and Preston Thein. He is survived by two of his nine brothers and sisters, Ray Griffin of Silsbee, Texas, and Betty Ann Morris (Jack) of Cullman, Ala. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and scores of friends who became part of his family because he so generously welcomed others into his life.

He was an extraordinary man who lived a life unlike any other. Roy’s early life was spent in the cotton fields of Alabama and Mississippi, where his family sharecropped. On Sept. 20, 1940, prior to Pearl Harbor, he volunteered to serve in the U.S. Army. Before being deployed to Europe, he “stole” the love of his life out of her senior high school classes and married her in secret with only his mother and baby sister (Betty Ann) as witnesses. During his military service, he helped establish the 531st Engineer Shore Regiment, the first land sea unit in the U.S. Army, training with British and Canadian forces in the Irish Sea. This unit subsequently established beach heads allowing troops and heavy equipment to land in French Morocco in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, and Normandy, where he was wounded and received a Purple Heart on the battle field. Following the invasion of France and then Germany, he and 150 men were stranded without weapons during the Battle of the Bulge. While the rest of his unit returned to the United States, he was reassigned to serve under General Patton, re-entered Germany, and helped liberate Buchenwald Concentration Camp. He remained on the front lines until VE day. In total, his service record lists nine campaigns in the European Theatre. He only spoke of his war experiences after the death of his beloved Bert, because he didn’t want to upset her with what he had seen and done during the war.

The day after his discharge from the Army, he began a job “rough-necking” on oil rigs, the only job he felt he could do after the war because the noise and the focus it required kept him sane. After losing two fingers on the oil rigs (which he affectionately called what was left “nubby” and “nubby junior” to the delight of all children), he held many positions, ultimately working as an equipment manager for International Harvester.

Following the 2003 death of his wife, he traveled with his family and extended family, retracing his steps in WWII through France, Italy, and Sicily. In each setting he was celebrated by the children and grandchildren of those that he had liberated during his service.

He was a man of strong but quiet faith, the one who would mow the minister’s lawn at night so that no one would know who did it. He once stated that “You can be rewarded for your good deeds on earth or, if you do them without recognition, you can be rewarded in heaven.” He is certainly basking in his rewards with his cherished Bert today.

Roy was always a behind the scenes hero and never sought glory or fame. However, in his later years, he was recognized with several honors. He received the Amazing Spirit Award from Baptist Health in 2004. Later that same year, he was honored for his participation in the Normandy invasion in Valognes, France, by the French Government, during the 60th anniversary celebration of D-Day. Most recently, the ARVets Organization honored his military service as the 2014 Outstanding Veteran of Past Conflicts in a ceremony at the Clinton Library.

Most will remember these things: his unwavering faith; his exceptional wit; his mouthwatering biscuits and sawmill gravy; treasured time “porch sitting” with anyone who happened by; and his blackberry jam and home-grown tomatoes, which were, the best, period. He never had much material wealth, yet it would be hard to find a richer man. Those that were given the opportunity to know him were truly blessed.

The family acknowledges the exceptional healthcare he received from the Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System, Arkansas Hospice, and Arkansas Veterans Hospice. In addition, the family thanks his special friends who loved and cared for him during the later years of his life, especially his “girls,” Suzanne Allbright and Paula Nance, Ed Slater, “the Limousine Driver,” and Kia Parker, his remarkable caregiver.

Visitation will be held on Monday, May 22 from 5:30-7 p.m. at Griffin, Leggett, Haley and Roth Funeral Home, 5800 W.12th St., Little Rock, Ark. Funeral services, May 23 at 10 a.m., Woodlawn Baptist Church, 5520 Woodlawn Dr., with Bro. Ben Jones officiating. FORT SMITH — On May 18th, our Lord stretched out His hand and reached for our Loving Husband, Father and Grandfather Earl Asbridge. Earl was one of the finest men you would ever know. Earl was a quiet man, but he taught us so much with just his actions. It was his ability to affect those around him positively, with a high degree of integrity, that taught us how to be Humble and Kind. His kindness, his generosity and courage were limitless. While a man sometimes of few words, he taught us how to love a woman as he did his wife of thirty-nine years Norma Sue. Not only in his words but in his actions, he showed us how a man should love a woman. He gave us all a foundation for the future. He dressed like a Cowboy and lived the Cowboy Code more than any man you would ever know. He could have been a Kenny Rogers lookalike. He never complained about anything in life, not an unkind word slipped from his lips even in the most difficult of times. He just moved forward with that special grace of a man with a purpose. He honored his commitments. He was honest, faithful, caring and loving. He was the kind of man we all wish we could be. He had his Heart right with God, teaching Sunday School, reading his Bible and praying daily. He praised God through all of his pain and suffering to the very end. He honored God with his life. He was the essence of the Christian faith. We will see you in Heaven Our Brother in Christ.

Earl was born June 6, 1944 in Marion, Kentucky to Eugene and Marie Asbridge. He was the oldest of three. Earl lived with his wife Norma in Fort Smith, Arkansas, for the last thirty-nine years as Loving Husband and Wife. He was a member of Fianna Hills Baptist Church where he taught Sunday School classes for years. He was a devout Christian man who loved the Lord. He was always seen in Fort Smith wearing his Cowboy hat and boots. His biggest love besides his family were his friends and customers at Breeden Dodge where he worked for thirty-eight years. Earl spent his early years in the Army. He loved his service while in Alaska. His final days he enjoyed every TV show about that part of the world.

He is survived by his wife, Norma Sue Neel Asbridge of Fort Smith; stepson, Chuck Chunn of Fort Smith; brother Don Asbridge and wife Linda of Bella Vista; sister, Judy Long of Arkoma; and grandchildren Jennifer Chunn of Fayetteville, Christopher Chunn of North Little Rock, Zane Chunn of Fort Smith and numerous extended family members.
