Local students win awards in Preserve Our Past contest

LITTLE ROCK — Students from Faulkner and Pope counties were among winners in the 26th annual Preserve Our Past art and essay invitation­al sponsored by the Arkansas Historic Preservati­on Program, an agency of the Department of Arkansas Heritage.

Jada Parker of Pottsville Junior High School won first place in the seventh- and eighth-grade essay division for a piece on the Latimore Tourist Home in Russellvil­le.

Lanie Singleton of Greenbrier Westside School won first place in the fifth- and sixth-grade art division for a drawing of the Cedar Creek Bridge at Petit Jean State Park. Isabella DeLeuil of Atkins Middle School took first place in the fifth- and sixthgrade essay division for writing about Bruce Hall.

The contest was held as part of Arkansas Heritage Month 2017 activities.

Other seventh- and eighthgrad­e essay division winners included Kimbra Rhodes of Pottsville Junior High School, third place for writing about the Wilson House in Russellvil­le.

Other fifth- and sixthgrade art division winners included Kayla Cothren of Atkins Middle School, second place for a drawing of Little Rock Central High School.

Winning honorable mention in the seventh- and eighth-grade essay division were Brenlee Barton of Pottsville Junior High School, who wrote about the old Monroe County Jail in Clarendon, and Paige Ellington of Pottsville Junior High for an essay on the Latimore Tourist Home.

Caden McDaniel of Atkins Middle School won honorable mention in the fifth- and sixth-grade art division for a depiction of the Daisy Bates House in Little Rock.

Winning honorable mention in the fifth- and sixthgrade essay division was Kamryn Allison of Greenbrier Westside School, who wrote about Petit Jean State Park.

First-, second- and thirdplace winners in each division will receive a trophy, honorable-mention recipients will get a ribbon, and all students who entered will receive a certificat­e.
