Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau collected an honorary doctorate and met Queen Elizabeth II during a trip to Scotland. Trudeau visited the queen Wednesday at her Edinburgh residence, the Palace of Holyroodhouse. Trudeau’s office said the meeting was intended to “honor the queen’s importance to Canada’s history and to thank her for her continued dedication to Canada.” The 91-yearold queen is Canada’s head of state. Trudeau also received an honorary degree from the University of Edinburgh and praised the strong partnership between Scotland and Canada. Trudeau, whose maternal grandfather was Scottish, said “15 percent of Canadians have Scottish roots, so Canadians, including me, have a strong link and affinity with Scots.” The Canadian leader was on his way to the Group of 20 summit that is being held Friday and Saturday in Hamburg, Germany.
Ivanka Trump, President Donald Trump’s daughter and a senior adviser, defended a White House proposal to mandate paid leave for new parents in a letter to the editor published Wednesday in The Wall
Street Journal. The paper had previously criticized the plan by Donald Trump’s administration “as bad policy and worse politics” that would increase taxes on businesses. The plan would be funded through unemployment insurance. Ivanka Trump said in a response, “Providing a national guaranteed paid-leave program — with a reasonable time limit and benefit cap — isn’t an entitlement, it’s an investment in America’s working families.” Ivanka Trump has met with Democratic and Republican lawmakers on the issue.
